As a big fam of Renee Zellweger and also a big lover of musicals, Chicago more or less appealed to me straight away. The only one thing that put me off was Catherine Zeta Jones, because I have never been a big fan of her to say the least.
Chicago takes us back to the days when jazz was all the rage, and not being a huge fan of jazz myself I did find the film, both the story and the music quite entertaining, and would rate it a lot higher than what I originally anticipated.
When Roxy Hart (Renee Zellweger) felt betrayed by her lover and agent, who promised her he would make her a star, and was using her purely for what a man likes best, in pure anger and cold blood she shot him dead. Being present at the scene and trying to get her husband to cover for her, she couldn't pull the wool over there eyes and she was sent to prison, Chicago's Murderess Row.
At her time in prison, she find herself locked up with a fellow entertainer who has made it big time, however caught her husband having sex with her sister, and once again in cold blood she killed them both. Catherine Zeta Jones plays Velma Kelley, as Jazz duet with her sister, however all alone as she pulled that trigger and killed her.
Queen Latifah plays the main screw within the prison and is return for money, she does try to help them out, only if it is in her best interest, however, she will betray them without hesitating.
Richard Gere plays Billy Flynn, the lawyer who can turn any case around and make even the worst of criminals to look innocent. Flynn is looking after both cases of the two jazz singers.
Being enemies Kelley and Hart don't really hit it off and the constant bitchiness and slandering between them is comical. They know that if they want to get out of prison and make it big, they need to join forces, however when they dislike each other as much as them pair do, its quite hard to do so.
The performances of both Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta JOnes, both from an acting point of view and there cabaret style shows that they put on are outstanding and I have seen Catherine Zeta Jones from a different point of view having seen her in this.
Although it's s serious story, there is quite a lot of comedy involved especially with Richard Gere's character, which I think he did play very well, however I did not think the role suited him and they culd have picked someone else that may have done it better and fitted in the character easier.
Overall I found this film quite easy to watch and was very entertaining, a little bit different to the norm. Its not a film for everyone, I can imagine it would annoy a lot of people, however if you are a little partial to musicals, then its worth a viewing.
