Dickens’ bitter social commentary laced Christmas tale has seen itself translated onto the movie screen on countless occasions over the years, with everyone’s favourite grouch played by everyone from Alastair Sim to Bill Murray over the years - even the Muppets had a slice of this particular pie alongside Michael Caine. It would then take something special to be able to offer anything new or worth seeing to the crop of existing movies so its rather disappointing that Christmas Carol: The Movie is quite so disappointing. Despite an interesting cast of voice over actors being assembled to play the various parts, this movie is really quite abysmal. Its ...  Read the complete review

Goodness knows how many times Charles Dickens' famous Yuletide yarn has been filmed, but personally it is a story that I could never tire of hearing. I do believe that this version (which curiously has the two words 'The Movie' attached to its title - why state the obvious?) is the first time the tale has received the animated treatment for the big screen. Walt Disney did produce 'Mickey's Christmas Carol' a few years ago - I think that went straight to video. THE PREMISE Victorian London, Christmas Eve Evening. There are several reasons to go watch this movie: 1. You are completely exhausted from hitting the shops and need a quite place to take a nap. The streets will obviously be packed with crazy shoppers so the pavement is not a good place to place your weary head. Instead buy a ticket for the only movie that isn’t sold out this Christmas, kick off you’re shoes and slip into a joyous slumber. 2. Watching any kind of special effects in a movie is against your principles/ ethics/ religion. This movie is guaranteed to have you fixated with it’s hum drum graphics, lack of colour, very two dimensional graphics and complete lack of magic. ...  Read the complete review

I had the good fortune to attend the premiere of this movie as part of the totally awesome Cinemagic international film festival for young people which is held annually in Belfast. I was really looking forward to the experience, not just because of the occasion, but also because I like the story and, most important of all, I was accompanied by my 10-year-old daughter. The involvement of highly respected actors, including Nicolas Cage, Kate Winslett and Simon Callow, added to expectation that we were in for a real treat. As there were no reviews available, I did not know what to expect but, having seen a number of versions of the story, including the rather ...  Read the complete review
