Chuck and Buck is a dark comic indie drama from 2000 directed by Miguel Arteta. The film revolves around 27-year-old misfit Buck (Mike White), a simple and rather odd soul who still lives with his mother, sucks lollipops and plays with action figure toys. When his mother dies, Buck decides to invite his estranged childhood friend Chuck (Chris Weitz) to the funeral. I watched this film for the first time at the weekend. My boyfriend picked it out because he’d heard some good things about it, I’d never even heard of it. The title “Chuck & Buck” made me think of some slapstick American comedy film (not my kind of thing) but after reading the synopsis on the back of the box I decided to give it a go, and I’m glad I did. I found it hard to believe that only one other persons left an opinion on this film. It basically involves two childhood friends (Chuck and Buck) who meet up again years later when Chuck is a high flying executive and Buck still acts like a child. the story then follows Buck's obsession with Chuck through various stages until it reaches a bizarre and ultimately happy end. The film uses lo-fi production methods but this only serves to make it more charming and twee. Chuck & Buck was one of those films that was playing when I was in New York a couple of years ago. I'd heard good things about it from fellow film students but never really got to see it myself. It was one of the breakout films to be shot on Digital Video and as it's an avenue I'm now exploring-well I had to check it out. The film tells the story of Buck White - A 25 year old 'deranged' man living the life of a child, with the mindset of a 10 yr old. Playing with kiddies toys, easting too many sweets?He is a sweet guy, someone that most people would feel bad for. Of course, all this could also be said for Norman Bates.
