The main thing that you'll notice about Chungking Express (which incidentally must challenge for worst translated title ever) is the style. A mirage of flashy effects, beautiful cityscapes and vivid colors, the film is a joy to look at. On one hand, this is great, as it breaks the formula look that seems to dictate the style of some many films. On the other hand it's unfortunate as it can distract away from the stories on offer here, which is a shame, as however nice the film looks, the underlying stories are the most important part. Chunking Express tells two similar, yet very different stories about love and the losing ... Read the complete review

Chungking Express is the film that introduced me to the work and world of director Wong Kar-Wai and since then I am a devoted fan to his films. Chungking Express tells two different stories, having Honk Kong as background, which are just slightly connected by the location where the characters mingle, the Chungking Express cafe (therefore the name of the film) and also because both stories follow broken-heart cops. In fact, I think that is one of the messages of this film: that everyone is connected somehow. The cast of well known Chinese actors, like Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (In the Mood for love, Hero, "Lust, Caution"), is ... Read the complete review

Synopsis: The story of two un-conventional love stories of two lonely policemen, set in bustling urban Hong Kong. Wong Kar-Wai has to be one of my favourite directors of all time, definitely in the top 3 of the last few decades. It's no secret that i love asian cinema, just looking back over this list it is pretty obvious that i find it probably the most interesting and though provoking area of cinema. And i must say that Kar-Wai's career so far has to be the most interesting of any director to emerge from Hong Kong in a while. The way his films flow is something i don't think anyone can repeat and his very chic look at love and life is something that gives ... Read the complete review

Chungking Express was released in 1996 and is in Cantonese/Mandarin.Set in Hongkong,it tells two different stories with some sense of similarity. Both of them focus on two different policemen who are coping with a breakup with their respective girlfriends. This is a romantic drama, where the characters undergo a loss of love and somehow in their own way finds new hope and love. The first story has Takeshi Kaneshiro and he does a fine job at portraying the guy who has lost his love and keeps awaiting(in his own style by buying canned pineapples) for her to return. The second story has Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Faye and covers a longer duration. The film is one of ... Read the complete review

The mid-1990s were an incredibly important time for independent and foreign cinema in the US, thanks primarily to the Weinstein Brothers creating their "art house" label Miramax. With the likes of Clerks, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Chungking Express, the independent film began to gain a large following by the late 90s. Chungking Express is directed by Wong Kar-wai, a director now famous for his tender, visually stunning character pieces, frequently utilising narrative collage and juxtaposition to draw out stark differences between characters and situations. The film tells two stories told in sequence, each about a Hong Kong cop and his ... Read the complete review
