City of angels is an angelic heart warming romantic film from 1998 starring Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan. It follows Seth (Cage) an angel that is on our earth to watch over the living and he watches Maggie (Ryan) who is a beautiful heart surgeon who has lost her first ever patient. She is total despair and cage falls in love with her. Being an angel he cannot touch, smell or even feel her and his gift becomes a burden rather than a blessing. He then meets Messenger (Dennis Franz) and he opens his eyes to a possibility of becoming a mortal being again as that was what he had done for the love of his life. So what do you do to be with the one true love of your life, would you give up eternity in heaven? Would you give up that freedom to feel love as well as pain?
I really like this film but especially for the unpredictable ending. I completely and utterly did not expect that to happen.
Ryan and Cage are great here together and Cage plays Seth brilliantly. I would never have put him in a role like this but it suits him. Ryan is in a serious role for a change but it's still the romantic role we know her for (Sleepless in Seattle, You've got Mail) A workaholic who puts everything into her career. Cage watches her and becomes infatuated with this beautiful woman and you can really feel his emotions in turmoil.
The settings where the angels, all dressed in black for some reason, are standing watching the sunset is eerie but very effective and it gets you thinking sometimes are there angels around watching and looking over us?
I am finding this hard to write up about without putting any spoilers in. One thing I do love about this film is the soundtrack and how fitting they were.
One song used to the best of its ability was Iris by Goo Goo Dools -
And I'd give up forever to touch you, 'Cause I know that you feel me somehow
And I don't want the world to see me, Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken, I just want you to know who I am
And Angels by Sarah McLachlan always gives me the shivers and goose bumps.
One thing this film does is make you think and is great for a debate on such things as well as wondering if there is the possibilities out there.
One of the greatest sayings I have ever heard in a movie has to be 'I would rather have had one breath of her hair, one kiss from her mouth, one touch of her hand, than eternity without it' Truly a wonderful line.
If you watch this film with an open mind and embrace the love story you would definitely find this a wonderful and moving film and after it ends try and think of the meaning of how they ended it.
