City Of Angels (DVD)
Advantages: A well acted love story with a twist.
Disadvantages: Your going to cry.
City of angels is one of my favourite films, so when I was ironing yesterday I popped it on for another watch. City of angels was made in 1998 and produced by Brad Siberling. It stars Nicolas Cage as Seth and Meg Ryan as Maggie.
Maggie is a brilliant heart surgeon; she cares deeply about her patients and has never lost one on her operating table. Everything changes when one of her patients dies during a routine operation. Maggie starts to feel that she truly has no control over her patients' lives and that they could die even when there is no reason for the surgery to fail.
Seth is an angel he wanders around with his friend Cassiel (Andre Braugher) who is also an angel. He helps people through there difficult times providing unseen comfort. As an angel Seth can not be seen or felt unless he chooses to show himself. He is more than happy with his beautiful life till the day he sees Maggie.
The supporting actors in this film are really good and my favourite one is Nathaniel Messinger (Dennis Franz) he was once an angel but chose to fall when he fell in love with his wife Teresa (Joanna Merlin) and has truly embraced life as a mortal which is why he is in the hospital needing a heart operation on the first place. He can sense that Seth is near and when Seth realises this he shows himself to Nathaniel.
Seth falls deeply for Maggie and longs to be with her. The only way to do this is if he chooses to fall. Will Seth choose an immortal life with Maggie or will he continue to observe her unseen?
I'm trying really hard not to give away too much of the plot without making the film seem to shallow and boring. This film is fantastic and I really do enjoy it I must have watched it twenty times in the last ten years and it never loses its attraction for me or seems to age.
Meg Ryan plays Maggie brilliantly. This is a lot different to her usual romantic comedy rolls so don't be expecting any laughs while watching this. Nicolas Cage plays Seth fantastically. He hits on the sadness and beauty of an angel perfectly. You can truly feel how it would be to observe people through the best and worst bits of there lives, not able to influence just to comfort and reassure when needed.
The soundtrack to this movie is excellent with tracks from Alanis Morissette, Pete Gabriel. Sarah McLachin, The Goo Goo Dolls and many others. The music complements the film perfectly it adds to the feel of the film and tells the story all on its own. When I listen to the soundtrack it brings back all the film for me, my favourite song is Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls and I warble along to this one even when the film is playing.
I would say that this film is aimed mainly at women I don't think men would appreciate the longing looks that Seth gives Maggie most of the way through the film and the deep feelings that seem to flow of the screen. I heartily recommend this film to any one who is looking for a love story with a twist. You definitely need the Kleenex out for this one.
Summary: A brilliante film that is well worth a watch.
