City Of Angels (DVD)
Advantages: Some cracking songs on the soundtrack!
Disadvantages: Bleak, miserable and upsetting love story with tragic consequences!
This is one of those films, that came out in the late nineties, that had something of a big impact upon its release. Hyped as one of the greatest and most tragic love stories ever filmed, it featured Meg Ryan, well known by now for her soppy roles in films such as When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless In Seattle, and Nicholas Cage who himself had established by now something of a following.
Cage stars as an Angel, invisible to human eyes, who spends his time both hanging out at the library with his fellow Celestial beings and at the beach listening to the symphony of the sunset as it falls across the sand. By a chance series of events, he comes across Meg Ryan, here starring as a doctor, and falls instantly and hopelessly in love when he realises she can see him. But for them to be together, Cage has to make the decision whether or not to give up his Celestial status and become a mere mortal! If he decides to fall from grace and join the ranks of humanity, he will give up all that he knows and will never be able to hear the sunset ever again. Faced with such a choice, the question begs....just how far would YOU go for love?
Sounds lovely right? Sounds sickly, sweet and soppy? But this is a film with a hidden twist and an ending that, for me, was so bleak that I almost felt cheated and betrayed. I will not give anything away for those who haven't seen it but beware because you may need tissues. Personally the ending puts me right off this film which I view as a depressing and miserable movie in light of my presience about how it all ends up! Certainly this is no match for Wim Wenders's exquisite German film, Wings of Desire, which inspired this Hollywood blockbuster!
Cage and Ryan work fairly well together but neither has to really strain and this does feel, at times, like they are playing it by the numbers. In my own opinion, I would rather slash my wrists than watch this again but the soundtrack is amazing and more than makes up for the faults of this film; one of the saddest I have ever seen and for all the wrong reasons!
If you are going to watch this, don't forget...pack some tissues and prepare to have your emotions manipulated. Because this is what this film is all about! Like The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, this film is alll about setting you up for the ending and reducing you to a blubbering wreck and personally I hate anything that tries to set you up this way!!!
Summary: An angel chooses whether to give up immmortality to be with the one he loves!
