Advantages: A very good lesson behind this film
Disadvantages: Spent a fortune on tissues.
The City of angels was released in America on the 10th of April 1998. This film is described as being a fantasy as well as being undoubtedly romantic. Quite fittingly, this was shot in Los Angeles.
Cast and crew.
Directed by : Brad Silberling
What is the film about?
Nicholas Cage plays an angel names Seth. The aim of the angels is to watch over people and protect them without being noticed. While human beings are close to the end of their lives, these angels appear to them and guide them into death and guide them into the next life.
Whilst Seth is guiding someone Into death whilst this patient is having heart surgery, Seth sees the determination of Maggie Rice, Meg Ryan, in trying to save this poor mans life. Seth is in the hospital with Maggie and he meets one of her patients who senses that Seth is an angel, he knows this because he himself used to be an angel.
They talk and this patient tells Seth that he made the choice to become human and feel the emotions that humans have instead of being numb. Seth has his mind set on doing this when he realises that he can have a full blown relationship with Maggie, emotional and physical.
With Seth having the free will to become a human, all the emotions of being a human hits him, pain, love, need, desire. With one goal in mind, he goes to see Maggie, she is not at the hospital and he learns that she has taken a break miles away. So through the rain and the cold he treks to find her.
Seth finally realises that he would give up anything to feel what he felt with Maggie, even if it was just for one night. I won't give the ending of the film away as some people don't like spoilers! So if you want to know what happens, watch the film!
This film had me heartbroken, when I finally stopped boo hooing I thought about the story to the film, and that is, yes love is painful and it is very hard but in the end, it is worth it. As they say, it's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. I think this film articulates it perfectly. Yes I would recommend this 100% because I do think it is a very strong lesson in life.
Summary: A wonderful romantic film
