Rating:
Clerks was cult director Kevin Smith's first film. Shot in black and white, on a miniscule budget, with a surprisingly large cast that blatantly consists almost entirely of the crew's friends and family (many of them playing several parts throughout the film), Clerks essentially acts as a Smith starter pack. Detailing a day in the life of shop workers Randall and Dante, almost everything in the film is familiar to those who (like me, I'm ashamed to confess) only began watching Kevin Smith films with Dogma. The script is full of jokes about oral sex, and very little else. Veteran drug dealers Jay and Silent Bob are, well, they're also making jokes ... Read the complete review

Clerks was Kevin Smiths first film and is amazing funny. The story follows Dante a discount store worker who is made to work on his day off because another worker is sick. Hes going to miss his Hockey game now, and his ex-girlfriend is getting married to someone else. The main point of this movie is the great dialogue, Smith knows how to make people laugh though great conversations. The film also gave birth to Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith), the funniest characters ever invented. The region 1 DVD is a great one being a miramax collectors edition. It has an amazing funny audio commentary in which Jason Mewes is asleep just about all ... Read the complete review

Let me tell you a story, it’s about this film and the unusual path I took to loving it… I rented this film a couple of years ago now from Blockbusters. It was one of those night where you go to the video store with a few films in mind that you’d like to see and guess what –Yup, they were all out! So, we perused the shelves for a while looking for something, anything to watch and we spotted this. We read the back cover “seems ok, it won an award” so we took it home. The film started and it was black and white, we looked confused – “ermmm, what’s going on? Isn’t this a modern film” We ... Read the complete review

note: also appears in part on Flixster and The Student Room Clerks is the film that shot director Kevin Smith to fame, and allowed him create numerous other films within the same universe, such as Chasing Amy, Dogma, Mallrats, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and the direct sequel, Clerks 2. Were it not for the success of this independent gem, Smith wouldn't be where he is today, but as a parable of the drudgery of working in a dead-end job, combined with some intelligent musings on life and love, this film clearly connected with a lot of people. At one time it was also the most stolen VHS in the history of rental stores. The film revolves around ... Read the complete review

I must confess, I have a soft spot for low budget films. Having delved briefly into amateur filming making once or twice I find it easier to forgive some stilted acting, choppy editing or scenes that aren't quite what the could be. Clerks for me is the ultimate low budget flick. We join twenty something Dante as he is dragged to work on his day off. Working at the local convenient store, we see the bizarre locals that frequent the store, meet Randal who staffs the video store next door and watch a series of set pieces in Dante's life unfold. Dante is unhappy with his job but doesn't want to go back to school, he wants to get back with his old girlfriend but ... Read the complete review
