Advantages: Brilliant script, great actors

Disadvantages: Being shot in black and white may not be to everyones taste

Funded on multiple credit cards and an insurance payout this film

The film follows Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) who is called into work on his day off at his local Quick Stop convenience store. He is joined at work by his best friend Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson) who works in the video store next door but spends most of his day in the Quick stop. Dante then discovers that his ex-girlfriend has got engaged and spends most of the day pondering whether to go back to her or remain with his current girlfriend. There is to much that happens in this film for me to explain with plenty of extremely funny conversations between Randal and Dante. My favourite part of the film is their discussion about whether any indepent contractors on the deathstar in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi were innocent victims.

The film was shot in just 21 days and all scenes inside the store were filmed overnight at the Quick Stop where Kevin Smith worked. This is why the film had to be shot in balck and white and why at the start of the film the shutters over the window are jammed so the viewer does not know it is actually night.

This film marked Kevin Smiths arrival as a leading director and paved the way for his five follow up view askewniverse films.

Jeff Anderson excels in this film and is given the best lines but Kevin Smith later explained that he had planned to play the role of Randal but would not have been able to if he wanted to direct which led him to play Silent Bob.

Ofcourse this film is not going to please everyone and is generally aimed at the young adult audience but there is enough to keep anyone entertained. Anyone that does see this film and enjoys it should check out Kevin Smiths other films; Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks II. Clerks is the best film Kevin Smith has made to date and is the best place to start for anyone interested in watching them all.

This film can be found for around £5-6 and its well worth the value.

Summary: A truly original comedy with something for everyone and one of the best comedies of all time
