Clockwise (DVD) ... / DVD released 22 April, 2002 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: PAL / Clockwise is a light-hearted farce that works because John Cleese is so effective as the tightly wound, punctilious headmaster whose well-organised life unravels in a series of disasters on his journey to a conference. Cleese is a master of fussy, fastidious characters in exasperating situations, bottling up his frustration under good manners and sardonic comments until he finally blows, but he’s also startlingly vulnerable as he systematically loses all sense of himself. Dressed in monk’s robes and stranded on a lonely country road, he looks down at his naked wrist and sighs, "I’ve even lost the time". Michael Fryan (the playwright of Noises Off) doesn’t really have much of a story behind the situations, but he provides plenty of complications, and Cleese holds the film together with his brittle manner, single-minded drive, and hilarious headmaster’s condescending haughtiness. While it will seem slight to many, Cleese fans will love it.--Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

Throught the film he is chased by the police for kidnapping, tresspassing, car theft, vandalism and impersonating a monk. Honestly I think that only John Cleese could pull this character off. Of course he is more than ably accompanied by his fellow actors who bounce off Cleese and vice versa so well that you can almost believe this i...more

Crowned Review Clockwise (DVD): Clock Watching (John Cleese Style) (547 words)

Rating:

If you enjoy Monty Python's Flying Circus, Fawlty Towers, and the somewhat off beat humour of comedian/actor John Cleese, then Clockwise (1986) is definitely a movie that you don't want to pass over. The whole movie is really just a vehicle for Cleese's crazy antics, and though it obviously has a full cast, they are really only there as padding and foils for Cleese's next mad cap scenario. Cleese plays Brian Stimpson, the fastidious and disciplinarian headmaster of a local comprehensive school, with a fetish for fastidious timekeeping. (Hence the title of the movie) When he's called upon to deliver the keynote speech at a National Convention of ...  Read the complete review

Clockwise is the classic 1985 comedy starring John Cleese in full Basil Fawlty mode, as Brian Stimpson, the headmaster of a comprehensive school. He's obsessed with punctuality and order, so the opening scenes show him watching over his playground with binoculars and stopping any trouble makers with his PA system. On this day, he's supposed to be speaking at a Headmasters' Convention in Norwich, because he has just been appointed chairman of the group for his excellent achievements. After an assembly which scarily recalls my current school mornings, even down to the hymn they sing (plus he does actually look my headteacher too) he leaves for the station in ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Clockwise (DVD): No time to say Hello, Goodbye, I'm late (809 words)

Film only review. Clockwise is a very funny, if not exasperating at times, British comedy film. It has a good cast but for some the most famous face will be John Cleese in the lead role of Headmaster. Clockwise was released in 1985, three years before A Fish called Wanda had cinema audiences rolling in the aisles. Other readers may remember Cleese more for his early performances in Monty Python's Flying Circus. Clockwise is basically the tale of a school Headmaster attempting to get to an important teacher's conference on time. Brian Stimpson, John Cleese, is normally a very punctual individual. He is a pedantic character who likes everything to run ...  Read the complete review

Once again John Cleese can do no wrong in my eyes and this film is no exception. I remember watching this film years ago with my mum, so when i was trawling through HMV one saturday afternoon and saw it for the ridiculous price of £3.99 I had to treat myself, and my memories were not disappointed. To set the scene, and quoting from the blurb on the back of the DVD, this film follows the hilarious, and I have to agree that some moments are just shere Cleese brilliance, antics of Brian Stimpson (John Cleese) who is the headmaster of a secondary School. This man rns his life to the second, hence the title, but his world is turned upside down when he says turn ...  Read the complete review
