Advantages: Different, original, interesting, nice special effects

Disadvantages: Nothing happens really

I remember hearing about this movie and regret not seeing it in the cinema, rather than just renting it as I think it would have impressed me more.

Cloverfield was released last year and was directed by Matt Reeves.

The movie is about an insight of five friends in New York who experience a "monster" that attacks the entire city. The camera is a handheld and the whole idea is that it's meant to look realistic, like The Blair Witch Project. I didn't have any problems with the camera work and thought it added a nice effect to the movie, especially as it is the exact length of a tape the camera can record for.

However, the movie doesn't really go anywhere and is really just a very small snippet. The main plot is that Beth McIntyre is trapped inside the apartment after it was wrecked by the monster and the group go and save her, urged on by Rob.

Questions aren't explained and nothing is developed in the movie... but that was the whole point. It wasn't meant to be your typical movie with a definitive end. It's definitely interesting and worth a watch but it sort of feels like a waste of time once it's over.

Summary: I don't recommend buying the DVD, rent it instead
