Advantages: Very good and clever film
Disadvantages: a bit slow to start with
The Plot *****************
The film starts out with some friends throwing a surprise party for Rob, played by Michael Stahl-David, who is leaving New York to go to Japan. At the party Rob's brother Jason (Mike Vogel) gives a camcorder to best friend Hud (T.J. Miller), and tells him to tape everything. Beth played by Odette Yustman) is robs ex girlfriend arrives at the party with a new boyfriend in tow. There are still strong feelings from Rob for Beth.
Just as you start to think you have been given the wrong film in the wrong case there is a loud explosion not far from their building and they go on to the terrace to film it.
At first they are not sure what it is until clarification from other sources say that a kind of alien monster has crash landed and is causing mayhem in New York. Instead of fleeing from that direction Rob finds out the Beth has headed home which is towards where the scary thing monster is tearing up the town.
My Views ****************
The unique way this film was shot is new and innovative and according to critics or hype, some people that watched it at cinemas left early suffering with motion sickness. This put me off watching it for a while as i prefer to be able to see whats happening.
I am pleased to say that i am glad i did watch it. I found the style intriguing and it was not as shaky as i was expecting. You do sometimes feel like shouting at the cameraman to film it more clearly but it all adds to the fun. The scene shot in the subway is one to make you jump and the special effects are good, especially the scenes of the monster strutting its stuff in the streets.
There is a nice twist at the end of the film that i found very surprising and i am not even going to give you a clue to what happens at the end. I am very surprised that we have not had a influx of films shot in the same way as what cloverfield was.
This is well worth making the effort to see and stick with the beginning because it does get much better. The film is not for the feint hearted but it is not as scary as it has been made out to be. If it was i would not have watched it all.
Summary: This film is a new way to male movies
