The Cocoanuts is the first feature-length Marx Brothers film and was directed by Joseph Santley and Robert Florey and first released in 1929. The film is an adaption of a Marx Brothers Broadway show, adapted to the screen by Morrie Ryskind from the George S Kaufman play. In The Cocoanuts, Groucho plays Mr Hammer, the proprietor of the Hotel de Cocoanut - with assistant Jamison (Zeppo Marx). Margaret Dumont plays wealthy dowager Mrs Potter, who as usual serves as Groucho's comic foil and - in the course of the film - has the crooked Harvey Yates (Cyril Ring) and Penelope (Kay Francis) after her diamond necklace.
