Advantages: Visually god with strong performances
Disadvantages: Bit depressing
Visually this is an impressive film however I found it much too hard going to find it enjoyable and therefore it is one I'm hesitant to recommend as youu either have to be a real film buff or be very much into the storyline for it to be a truly enjoyable viewing experience.
It is a romance story set at the time of the American Civil War, Jude Law stars as a soldies with the Confederate army who deserts to return to see the love of his life played by Nicole Kidman. She is facing her own trials as the local town is being oppressed by a local villain who finds himself in charge and has a penchant for toture and tracking down those that flee the army. Meanwhile Law character is encountering a mixture of evil and desperate characters on his own travels with danger at every turn.
At times I found this film very depressing and certainly it was a tough watch, the performances are all excellent although I was not totally convinced by Renee Zellwegger in the role of a confidant and advisor to Ada (Kidman). Ra Winstone and Phillip Hoffman are both excellent in rather nasty character roles and the film does boast a strong cast.
This is the sort of film where one viewing is definately more than enough although some of the scenery and the way it is shot is breath taking and certainly the film does a good job of depicting a part of history that I knew little about.
Not for me but I can imagine that others will enjoy it.
Summary: Romantic film
