Advantages: Dan Aykroyd

Disadvantages: Lots

Coneheads was an adaptation of a series of sketches that Dan Aykroyd wrote for Saturday Night Live. He performed them on the Show with Jane Curtin. They were fairly amusing in their original form, so why doesn't this film work? After all, Dan Aykroyd has written "Ghostbusters" and "The Blues Brothers" (also a Sat Night Live adaptation) so he can certainly write comedy.

What I think went wrong was basically TIME. Too much time has passed between the Saturday Night Live days (late 70's/early 80's) and this film 1993. Dan has moved on as a writer and performer. he has aged, his sense of humour has changed and developed, and perhaps more importantly, so has the audience's.

The Coneheads was probably not that well remembered by the majority of film audiences anyway. I'm not even sure if those Sat Night LIve shows were even shown here on television and the film does make tiny references back to the original show; The aliens are referred to as "french" which meets with no queries from their ignorant American Neighbours.

If "Fred Garvin; Male prostitute" every makes it from the Saturday Night Live vaults onto the big screen, we know we are in big trouble.
