Advantages: Funny, charming film
Disadvantages: It is lightweight and aimed squarely at women
Confessions of a Shopaholic is a film based on the bestselling book by Sophie Kinsella, I have been reliably informed by my partner that the book is a funny and charming book for women who love fashion, shopping and romance.
The film has transferred the action from the UK to New York, Isla Fisher plays the main character, Rebecca, a shopping addict with large debts and a love of fashion.
By a happy quirk of fate she loses her job and gains a new one advising people on managing their finances for a financial magazine. She tries to hide her true self from the charming handsome boss Luke (Hugh Dancy) and starts to fall for him when he gets involved with a fashion rival.
The film is light and airy and the laughs are generally physical comedy laughs, Rebecca wants to become a fashion writer and juggles this with her desire to stop shopping.
Fisher is good in the main role, the story is lightweight and lacks substance but it is sweet and will appeal to women everywhere, apparently my partner didn't feel it was as good as the book but she enjoyed it nonetheless, I enjoyed it too, it wasn't what I expected being funnier and it develops into a very likeable film. The physical comedy is the best part of the film it is enjoyable and Dancy in particular is a charming, dashing hero.
The dummys who implore Rebecca to buy more are impressively created by Industrial Light and Magic and the film is colourful with some great outfits and some really good set pieces.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the film even though it meant I missed an important football match, I came round to appreciating why my partner wanted to see this so much.
