Advantages: Light hearted look at the bizarre wedding industry
Disadvantages: Its not a big budget blockbuster....
I had been looking forward to seeing this movie since I first heard about it 3 years ago, following several 'him' movie choices I decided it was high time to bump this up the lovefilm pile and so it arrived yesterday!
A bit of gentle persuasion in the form of a Domino's pizza and a beer was all that was required to get the other half to join me and so it began.
This British movie came out in 2006 and looking back with the work they have all done since has a fantastic cast including Robert Webb (huge fan!) Jimmy Carr (less of a fan) Martin Freeman (lovable dough ball) Alison Steadman (the movie in law from hell) and Olivia Colman (another Peep Show member). The actors themselves made this film and it is a privilege to see such British comic heavyweights in a movie together.
The film is a mockumentary that looks at three couples who are selected by Confetti magazine to take part in their competition for the most original wedding the prize being a house. The couples each have an original theme, one couple goes for tennis, another naturalist (you see rather more of Mr Webb than you bargain for!) and a 1930's movie themed epic. Over the course of the next 12 weeks we follow all three couples and the two gay wedding planners that have to plan and choreograph all three. Each couple is dealing with issues such as acceptance from family, acceptance of themselves and the general circus that comes with a wedding.
The falling down of this movie is that the statements it attempts to make are a little half hearted. For example the gay wedding planners actually have the strongest relationship of the whole movie, we see them protecting eachother, accommodating each other and being generally caring and kind, the point being that they are the two that should be married however this was filmed in archaic times before civil partnerships rightfully came into play. At the end of the movie they do have a happy ending but personally I don't think the comedic context helped this theme but you did get the message.
Obviously the main point is that not all people should get married. Its doesn't take long into the movie for you to see which couple I am referring to.
On the whole we both enjoyed this light hearted movie, at times it was funny and at others it was touching. Maybe due to my personal circumstances but the scene in which one of the brides is upset about not knowing whether her mother would come to her wedding because her father should be there was a bit like watching myself. It explores relationships between the couples and how they handle the stress of a wedding. As you can probably gather it isn't the laugh a minute that you might expect but there is some hilarious moments.
On the whole it is an amusing plot with some strong characters, basic sets, good script and perfect for a quiet night in but probably not on the must see again list, would be a good girl movie for a hen night.
On sale in Somerfield for £3.99 at the moment
Summary: A good watch with a great cast
