Cool Runnings (DVD) ... April, 2004 at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm / Features of the DVD: PAL / Based on an improbable but true story, Cool Runnings concerns the Jamaican bobsled team that competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Director Jon Turteltaub (Phenomenon) does a fine job with both the absurdity of the situation (the athletes had never even seen snow) and the passion behind it (their desire to compete and win). John Candy, in one of his last roles, is touching as a disgraced coach who seizes the opportunity to work with the Jamaicans as a chance for redemption. The bobsled scenes look good and the races are exciting. The climax, which is entirely unexpected, takes the film to a wholly different level, even if events in the story don't quite match the facts. --Tom Keogh

... bobsled coach Irving Blitzer played by John Candy to coach their team and to represent Jamaica in the Olympics, they do not realise that he is a disgraced coach due to cheating when he was a contestant and this causes problems along the way but ultimately this is a feel good comedy that is absolutely hilarious. The comedy comes mainly from two features, a bunch of Jamaican sprinters trying to get used to an alien sport in an alien climate for them and the fact that while they might be a team in name there is a lo...more

Crowned Review Cool Runnings (DVD): For John Candy (1239 words)

Having not watched Cool Runnings until recently I thought I was missing out on something, ‘it’s a cool movie’ said my friend when we saw it in the bargain bin, so I thought, hmmm, I’m gonna have to watch this. I can remember it coming out, but I couldn’t remember what it was about until I saw the cover again, oh, it’s a Walt Disney movie, this ones got to be good then, not excellent though, a Walt Disney film has never been excellent for me. I also realised then that John Candy was in it, who for me was a good actor. Sadly he died in 1994, just one year after making Cool Runnings. He’s a missed actor who only lived to ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Jamaica, we have a bobsled team! (749 words)

Rating:

Cool Runnings is a 1994 comedy film that is based on a true story of Jamaica's first bobsled team trying to make it in the Winter Olympics. The film is rated PG due to mild language and some violence and it is 98 minutes long. Plot As I said before, this is based on the true story of the Jamaican bobsled team. Some very talented and fast runners are competing in the 100m for the Olympic trials but they crash and burn due to a fall on the track. Derice is absolutely distraught and begs for the race to be re run but his request is denied. Deep in sorrow, he spots a picture of his father with another man, a man who once dreamt of forming a Jamaican bobsled ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Cool Runnings (DVD): Peace be the Journey! (760 words)

I loved this film when it first came out in 1994 and it was a well watched favourite in my old video collection. A few years ago though we became a DVD only house and this was one of the films that fell by the wayside. I had totally forgotten about it until I was redeeming some points on ipoints and I spotted this one. I'm so glad that I did because it really is a feel good film that is definitely worth watching many times. Cool Runnings is based on a true story and tells of Jamaica's first bobsled team. It all starts when some talented sprinters literally crash out of the olympic trials for the 100 metres due to a nasty fall. One of them, Derice Bannock, ...  Read the complete review

Cool Runnings- Kiss My Lucky Egg ------------------------------------------------------ I watched this film for the first time millions of years ago, and loved it. It was one of those films, which was light hearted, but filled with a lot of laughs. I actually thought I had already done a review on this, but apparently not. Here it is: The Plot ------------------- The film follows three runners who are all attempting to qualify for the Olympics, when a fall, pulls them all out of the race. Derice (the main guy in the film), however will not stand for this and asks for a re-race, but to no avail. He does however find ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Cool Runnings (DVD): Be Cool (1208 words)

I’ve never really been a fan of Winter sports, so the entry of a Jamaican bobsleigh team into the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary pretty much passed me by. What I am a fan of, however, is a decent comedy film, so the release of "Cool Runnings", supposedly based on the story of the Jamaican Bobsleigh team, was unlikely to do the same. Sanka Coffie is the best pushcart driver on Jamaica, just about to win his 7th pushcart derby in a row. His best friend is Derice Bannock, who is about to win his place in Jamaica's 1988 Olympic team to compete in the 100 metres and follow in the footsteps of his father, who had won a gold medal in the 200 metres some ...  Read the complete review
