Disney this is not (Coraline (DVD))

Advantages: A real antidote to saccharine children's movies Disadvantages: May scare some children and adults! Coraline is a lesson in how extraordinary books should be made into films, and Henry Selick is one of the few (besides Burton) who could have done it successfully. Coraline is a modern day fairy tale about being careful what you wish for and is dark, spooky and deliciously imaginative in the same way that Nightmare Before Christmas, The Corpse Bride and Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are. Coraline is a somewhat neglected only child who is brought by her parents to live in a spooky creaky house with decidedly odd neighbours (a pair of elderly ex exotic dancing girls and a mouse training house climbing circus ringleader) and hates it. It rains all the time and she is bored, until she finds the door in the wall that leads to a world where she is the centre of adoration and gets everything she wants. Then things start to get scary. Can't wait for the DVD, and we love the lonely boy, Whybe, that hitches on to Coraline's quirks. Summary: Lonely girl has all her dreams come true, and then the buttons come out |
