Crash (DVD) ... released 05 December, 2005 at Pathe Distribution / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / Movie studios, by and large, avoid controversial subjects like race the way you might avoid a hive of angry bees. So it's remarkable that Crash even got made; that it's a rich, intelligent, and moving exploration of the interlocking lives of a dozen Los Angeles residents--black, white, latino, Asian, and Persian--is downright amazing. A politically nervous district attorney (Brendan Fraser) and his high-strung wife (Sandra Bullock, biting into a welcome change of pace from Miss Congeniality) get car-jacked by an oddly sociological pair of young black men (Larenz Tate and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges); a rich black T.V. director (Terrence Howard) and his wife (Thandie Newton) get pulled over by a white racist cop (Matt Dillon) and his reluctant partner (Ryan Phillipe); a detective (Don Cheadle) and his Latina partner and lover (Jennifer Esposito) investigate a white cop who shot a black cop--these are only three of the interlocking stories that reach up and down class lines. Writer/director Paul Haggis (who wrote the screenplay for Million Dollar Baby) spins every character in unpredictable directions, refusing to let anyone sink into a stereotype. The cast--ranging from the famous names above to lesser-known but just as capable actors like Michael Pena (Buffalo Soldiers) and Loretta Devine (Woman Thou Art Loosed)--meets the strong script head-on, delivering galvanizing performances in short vignettes, brief glimpses that build with gut-wrenching force. This sort of multi-character mosaic is hard to pull off; Crash rivals such classics as Nashville and Short Cuts. A knockout. --Bret Fetzer

Newest Review: ... Usually at this point in my reviews I write a brief overview of what the film is about. But with Crash that is not quite ... more

... so easy. The film follows the lives of several different people in Los Angeles, all with very different backgrounds and very different lives. The film shows how there lives are connected and the outcome of decisions they make in life and how they affect other people. That really is the best I can do when it comes to telling you the story. I enjoyed this film so much. It is beautifully shot, the director does a wonderful job. The acting is excellent, some really classy performances and yet I would not say one actor...more

Crowned Review Crash (DVD): Surrounded by people, but still so alone (771 words)
by - written on 27/09/08 (Very useful, 63 readings)
Rating:

Imagine living in a place so congested with people who are so self-concerned with their own pretensions and desires that it takes a car crash to bring about contact, and, in turn, their own prejudices to the ugly light of day. It's a place in which there are so many people living, but it's like entropic molecules - they bump and bounce and ricochet off their confines, til you're surrounded by chaos, but you still feel alone. Los Angeles is large but sparse, and hard to get around if you have no car. Trust me, I've been there... The car crashes are multiple metaphors in this movie about several character-driven vignettes; each story depicts the fragility and ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Racism Is A Weapon Of Mass Destruction (1014 words)

Not to be confused with the David Cronenberg film of the same name, Paul Haggis 2004 film 'Crash' focuses heavily on the subject of racism. Several stories are here intertwined and ultimately all of them link together. Racist people are shown from all walks of life, but there are also equal amounts of people here that are not racist in any way. It's a hard hitting crime drama, a film that I personally am a huge fan of. Given that the film won 3 Oscars, it would seem that I was not the only one impressed by Paul Haggis hit film 'Crash'. What's so brilliant about this film I feel is the intensity of it all. Paul Haggis does not hold back in the slightest in ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review I'm Angry and I Don't Even Know Why (1840 words)
by - written on 09/03/06 (Very useful, 478 readings)
Rating:

It's the sense of touch. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people, people bump into you. In L.A., nobody touches you. We're always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something……. Crash is the haunting tale of a group of mixed race people living in Los Angeles whose lives become extraordinarily linked because of a host of coincidences that happen in one night. A car crash and the brutal murder of a young black American sends Ria –a white Porto Rican- and Graham –an ageing afro American- into a dark world of politician corruption, where white politicians resent ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Crash (DVD): In only 36 hours, everything will change. (1169 words)
by - written on 01/08/09 (Very useful, 34 readings)
Rating:

Crash is an American/ German drama released in 2005. It was inspired by a real life experience by co writer, producer and director, Paul Haggis. The film is rated 15 due to strong language and moderate violence. Crash has 2 versions and the theatrical version runs for 112 minutes and the director's cut for 115. Crash only had a budget of $6.5 million but went on to make $53 million worldwide, more than 7 times the budget. As money was so tight during filming, Haggis used his own house for filming as well as his, and many other staff members' cars for certain scenes. The film skips between the stories of many different characters so I feel that is ...  Read the complete review
