Advantages: Some tunes in the soundtrack

Disadvantages: Screen play is pathetic

Watched this movie last night expecting a good story that would make me laugh, and cry but generally give me a good feeling. Nope! None of that thank you very much!

Overall, the story is OK, but the screenplay is pathetic! Basically the story is about Nicole Oakley & Carlos Nunes. Carlos being a hispanic boy and Nicole the daughter of a Representative (i.e. something like a local MP).

The dialogue is crap, the movie is full of useless scenes of girls acting like idiots (drink driving is one of them) and hispanic boys being complete d*ck heads! Like I said, the screenplay is total crap! Here is an example:

Carlos & hispanic mates sitting around a table at a cafe:
White guy - walks into the scene: What's up Carlos? These your homies?
Hispanic guy: Homies? - laughs
WG: Somethin' funny man?
HG: You funny man!
WG: What's with the attitude man? Just talking.

And it carries on like that for a few seconds before the hispanic guy punches the white guy and they run away.

Nicole and her friends are into "head-banging" music and dress really shitty walking around in tongs (the footwear, not underwear). They drive like idiots, and spend most of their day painting each other's toe nails with thick markers. I don't judge people on what they wear and what music they listen to, but advocating bad behaviour (drunkenness, carelessness, drink driving) in a movie aimed at teenagers is not my idea of a good time.

The Plot (Warning! Warning! Spoiler approaching!)
---------------------------------------------- ----------------

Nicole & Carlos go to the same high school (Pacific High). Nicole has a carefree "I hate the world" kind of attitude and doesn't care what her future holds. Whereas Carlos has been brought up very strictly by his mother. He is polite, considerate and hard working. He goes to Pacific High and tries real hard to get good grades so he can j
oin the Naval Academy in Annapolis and become a "Naval Aviator" (i.e. Tom Cruise in Top Gun).

Nicole hates the world because she thinks no one loves her. Her father is a "representative" and he is always too busy for her. Her real mum is not with them and her father has re-married. The step mom doesn't like Nicole's behaviour and is not ashamed to let Nicole know about it. Nicole is also not helping herself by being the most unruly teenager I have ever seen.

Nicole & Carlos meet, and Nicole falls in love with Carlos. In the meantime her carefree behaviour is rubbing off on to him and he gets in trouble with his mom and his brothers. Nicole's father is cool with their relationship because he has worked with "people of color" lots of times and does not see them as some other "white folk" see them. So he is happy to help Carlos by sponsoring him (don't know about this concept, it must be an American thing).

Will Carlos fall in love with Nicole? Will Nicole improve the relationship with her father? Will love conquer all? You'll have to watch & see.

---------------------------------------------- -------------------------------- ----------------------------------

Other bad behaviour advocated in the movie:
The very first time Nicole & Carlos are going to have sex. Carlos wants to use a condom, Nicole says "don't worry about it"!
They are in Nicole's room, about to have sex, the curtains are open. Her father is right outside and can see, Nicole still wants to continue but Carlos is shy!

I am not saying this kind of thing doesn't happen in real life (drink driving, careless sex, etc.). But hey, let's not glorify this in a movie aimed at teenagers!

Overall, the only parts of this movie worth watching are the last 25 minutes. These are good, sensible, acted well and do get a point across. The parts before that are a t
otal waste that is not worth the film they were captured on.

I would have walked out of the movie in the first hour but I needed to sit through it so I could write a proper review.

The ending did make my wife cry and there were a couple of teenage girls in the cinema that were clapping and cheering and crying as well. It must be a woman thing. Overall though, my wife also agress that the first parts were a waste.

I recommend you do not waste your money watching this at the cinema. Don't even wait for the DVD to come out. Just watch it on TV when it comes out in a few years time when you have nothing better to do.
