It's not really too hard to work out whether or not you're going to like this film; it's a foreign martial arts movie about two warriors in search of a stolen sword. It combines mystical martial arts with special effects!
I really like this film. It came out over a period where there were lots of similar films, a period where martial arts met special effects, and really there is nothing wrong with this example.
Visually it's stunning, with the setting and backdrops providing some interesting vistas.
Of course there are subtitles, which some will undoubtedly struggle with, but for me they didn't get in the way of the film.
The plot is a winner because it's so imaginative and different. Not only is it based in an Eastern culture, but there's also a hint of the supernatural to it. There's one bit where they pretty much start to fly, and it turns out they have that ability due to a certain technique they learnt; I love that idea, although I know it will be a turn off for some, especially in a genre that prides itself on realism so much.
The acting is solid but basic - there's nothing wrong with it, but it is very limited, and the language barrier obviously doesn't help there either.
At 2 hours in length it's slightly on the long side, but if you like this sort of film I think you will be fine.
The special effects are sparing but that makes them all the more brilliant when they do come in. In fact, they're so subtle it adds to the realism, and I found this an easy movie to get lost in.
All in all an excellent film that raised the bar in terms of martial arts movie.
