'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' demonstrates that Ang Lee is as much an amateur as Godard, Scorsese or Truffaut. He is able to work in a variety of genres and/or countries- yet his universal interests are not diluted whether costume drama or Taiwanese or American...and so on. The trouble with films from behind the bamboo curtain is they are either poorly dubbed or you have to watch every frame and subtitle to get the full experience. Hidden dragon is currently out on both formats offering you a choice at the same price. I didn’t know this and picked the dubbed one randomly. If you want to know ... Read the complete review

At the twenty-minute mark, jaded critics in New York, Chicago and L.A. have reportedly laid down their pens at screenings and applauded. Not to make too much of it, but Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’s first action scene might just very well be one of those Movie Moments—you know, the kind “they’ll be talking ... Having proven himself a black belt of versatility with unsung US civil war drama ride with the devil, Ang Lee’s venture into the world of martial arts may prove the diminutive Taiwanese director has no limitations whatsoever. Martial arts mayhem! I was going to see this film at the cinema, but I forced into seeing the not-so-good Miss Congeniality. So a couple of months later and this comes out on video (and DVD), and I head straight down to Blockbuster.
