Crowned Review Cry Baby (Directors Edition, DVD): Don't Be Square Dadio (1096 words)

Rating:

Cry Baby is a film directed by John Waters who is one of the few independent film makers with a reputation of what his nickname suggested, 'The Pope of Trash'. A Baltimore man who had a passion for gore and for all things bad taste. In 1972 he was responsible for the launch of Harris Glenn Milstead, an overweight 300lb transvestite, best known as Divine, for his performance in Water's own Pink Flamingos. The scene where he literally, but unapologetically chews on dog excrement had the critics stampeding for the exits. It was probably one of the sickest films to be made for the time but it did nothing to tarnish his reputation or Millstead's for that matter. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A Film For All Rockabilly Fans!! (126 words)

Rating:

Cry Baby is not just a musical, but a cleverly written spoof of all the teenage films of the 50's. Johnny Depp plays the lead character very well, but in my opinion the show is stolen by Iggy Pop's minor role as Cry Baby's uncle. The plot centres around a teenage delinquent and his love affair with a 'nice' girl. The music is enough to get your granny jiving with her zimmer. The comedy is sometimes dark, sometimes subtle and sometimes like being slapped in the face with a wet fish. Look out for a young Rikki Lake and Traci Lords early attempt at a less adult role. A must for any fans of Johnny Depp, Satire or just plain old Rock n' Roll. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Cry Baby (Directors Edition, DVD): A fantastic musical (232 words)

Rating:

CRY-BABY is a brilliant movie. It was directed by John Waters who also made HAIRSPRAY and SERIAL MOM. Johnny Depp stars as Wade 'Cry-Baby' Walker, a juvenile delinquent in a 1950s neighbourhood which surely could never really have existed (It's just too weird!). Walker can sing like an angel, and is called 'Cry-Baby' because when he sings his songs he sheds a single, solitary tear. Depp is at his best when playing oddball characters of one sort or another, and I have yet to find a film with him in it where he isn't excellent, and this is no exception. Walker's love interest comes from the right-side-of-the-tracks ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review 50's style (1068 words)

It may bring back some memories for those of you who grew up in the fifties. Yes, Cry-Baby has that fifties nostalgia thing going on. It also has fast cars, gang wars, teenage angst, high school cliches and cliques, sexual frustration, neurotic parents, and a lot of singing. There's a lot of romance, drama, comedy (in a corny sense of the word, but still funny), and music, as I said before. Those are the genres that combine together to make Cry-Baby. Cry-Baby is considered a musical comedy. This 1990 film is written and directed by John Waters. I can't help but think of this movie as a parody of Grease.I say Grease because it has a lot of ...  Read the complete review

John Waters directs an early Johhny Depp movie, the musical Cry Baby. Set in America during the 1950's Depp plays Wade 'Cry Baby' Walker a man who wears leather, has a quiff and is popular at school. He drives all the women wild especially when he cries hence the nickname even though he lives in a trailer. One girl obsessed by Cry Baby is Alison Vernon-Williams played by Amy Locane who although rich thinks she's got no chance with Wade. She is obsessed with his world of fast cars and faster women.
