Advantages: Iggy Pop's cameo
Disadvantages: The music
John Waters directs an early Johhny Depp movie, the musical Cry Baby.
Set in America during the 1950's Depp plays Wade 'Cry Baby' Walker a man who wears leather, has a quiff and is popular at school. He drives all the women wild especially when he cries hence the nickname even though he lives in a trailer. One girl obsessed by Cry Baby is Alison Vernon-Williams played by Amy Locane who although rich thinks she's got no chance with Wade. She is obsessed with his world of fast cars and faster women. However one girl out to stop her is highschool slut Lenora who thinks she's superior. The film is playedout with many songs and an expected ending. Watch out for a great cameo by Iggy Pop.
Women will love this performance by Depp who althugh can't sing does make a good rock star in appearence. The women are good in their roles. The dialogue is cliched and very cheesy though fits the criteria of the movie. There are a lot of cheesy one liners that adds to the humour in the film.
Nonetheless the film comes across as a bad version of Grease. While the acting is okay the music is terrible coming across as Depp playing a bad Elvis.
The DVD extras include deleted scenes it came from Baltimore and a commentary with the director.
Cry-Baby is a camp, but entertaining movie.
Summary: Cry Baby won't make you cry!

- 02/07/09 Ooh, I have to see this now! Interesting that you say Depp can't sing - he did pretty well at it in Sweeney Todd. |
