Advantages: Good acting, nice twists
Disadvantages: Poor set
If you're into Sci-Fi then I'm sure you will have heard about Cube. This is an independent film made on a small budget that did surprisingly well at the cinema. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and felt it portrayed well the relationships between humans who are thrust together in a high-stress situation. Okay, so at times the dialogue is a little cliché and the characters (once you knew each one's secret) are a little shallow, but it is the evolving story that keeps you watching. This is a clever plot directed with good pace and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing about who these people are, who created the Cube and if there actually is a way out. I particularly like the way the characters seem to change as they reveal their true selves, and the poetic justice of the ending. In summary, the good points: - The storyline and direction - The characters who are both interesting and challenging - Nicole De Boer acting (& looking) much better than in DS9 - The excellent scene with the thin bald man at the beginning (watch it - you'll see what I mean!) - Pretty good effects throughout - The fact that they never tell you much about who built the Cube - The long-lasting appeal of the film, you'll want to watch it again the bad: - The slightly unimpressive set that will not stand the test of time - Some of the dialogue is cheesy - The doctor, the weakest character and the things that don't add up: - the room they "all" started in was surely random because they each started in a different room (you'll understand if you have seen the movie) - why do they use up all their boots when they already know how to find out if a room is safe? If you're looking for a nice family "Hollywood" movie - steer clear. If
you want to see a film that you will still be thinking about a week later see Cube.

- 10/10/00 Great idea, shame about the acting! I agree with you about Nicole De Boer (I also thought the architect was acted well), but some of the other acting was awful. The worst was definitely the woman doctor, although the cop was pretty bad too. I liked the ending though - excellent stuff! |
