Disadvantages: no Cheryl

I love this show, and was really sad to see this was the last ever season. The show makers knew it would be, and so there was a lot of pressure to make it all work. Those of you who have seen season 5 will know that Larry has split up from Cheryl, and that makes for a unique series in this, the last of the bunch.

The show is a mock documentary that follows Larry in his bizarre life. Basically, Larry says it as it is, and is constantly offending people. The show is filmed through improvisation, and thus has a real sense of authenticity to it which sets it apart from most other shows. Also, it's on HBO, so there's a lot of swearing which I find entertaining in some perverse way.

Anyway, having no Cheryl really makes this season struggle. Don't get me wrong, Cheryl is in it a bit, but she certainly isn't a major character, and I just didn't feel there was so much chemistry in there without her. At the end of the day, Larry and Cheryl spent 5 years perfecting the art of being funny together, and now it's not there.

In Cheryl's place come new characters, including a family that Larry adopts after their house is destroyed in the New Orleans floods. These characters add a fair bit of fun to the mix, but they're new and take some getting used to, which isn't really the best thing to be doing in a final season.

The ending is kind of bizarre and tongue in cheek, and I kind of think it could have been a lot better too.

All in all, this is still a good season, but you can see why it was coming to an end.
