As a starting point on which to judge all that I say, I view this film to be one of the greatest pieces of French cinema ever produced. It undoubtedly has a deserved claim to be one of the finest period dramas ever made in the short history of film. Jean-Paul Rappaneau's version of the classic French play by Edmond Rostand casts Gerard Depardieu as the title character Cyrano, a French officer of the guard, distinguished for his capacity as both expert duellist and romantic poet. Edmond Rostand's classic drama gets another movie outing, but this time its the best ever. This is France's most expensive movie and its money well spent, the movie being lavished with awards and nominations after its release. It may shorten the original story someone, but starring Gerard Depardieau in the eponymous title role it is the only movie I have seen which manages to actually retain the syle and panache of the original stage play. I first watched this film about 8 years ago when studying French A Level. Our French teacher took our class to a cinema on the Kings Road in London, the type that dont show mainstream films but show all the foreign films. When we were told that we were going to see the film, I wasnt exactly enthused about it, after all, I wasnt enjoying French A Level, and the reason we were going to see it was to improve out French. The film was in French with English subtitles and we were told to listen to the French and not read the subtitles, JOY! This is the story of Cyrano De Bergerac a dashing soldier and wonderful poet, who falls in love with his delightful cousin 'Roxanne', unfortunately whilst a sensitive and incredibly sharp man, he has an enormous nose and is ridiculed for this, he therefore believes he isn't worthy of his true love and uses one of his cadets, Christian to woo Roxanne using Christian's looks and Cyrano's prose, both men love Roxanne but Christian can't put it into words and Cyrano feels too ugly to be worthy of her, who will win the fair maidens heart?
