Dances With Wolves (DVD) ... Grant ... / DVD released 23 April, 2001 at Pathe Distribution / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Dances with Wolves is the film that sent director-producer-actor Kevin Costner on his hubristic way; yet it is such a resonant and powerful film that we can almost forgive him for inflicting upon us his later "epic" The Postman. Here Costner plays a Union solder stationed at the far edges of the West, and left there to rot at his post. He finally sees the wisdom of the Lakota Sioux and finds peace within their community. But his decision to "go native" is greatly frowned upon by his military commanders, and the subsequent culture clash forms the backbone of the narrative. The story is told simply, and wastes not one word of dialogue, while the South Dakota locations provide a magnificent backdrop. Costner is sympathetic and accessible as an American Everyman who awakens to himself and the world around him... --Rochelle O'Gorman, Amazon.com

... was slightly put off from this film before even watching it as it was just short of 3 hours long but I did finally take the time to sit and watch it. I can honestly say that I am so glad I did. The storyline was excellent and I loved how it was bought to the scene. The role which Costner played as Dunbar was great. He started off as a proper US Army soldier and was always turned out correctly in his uniform but as the film moved on it was nice to see him change and mellow. He manage to show so many different sides...more

Premium Review Dances With Wolves (DVD): Dunbar, not Dumb Bear! (453 words)

Rating:

Often considered one of Kevin Costner's most powerful films to date, Dances With Wolves is a thoughtful and emotional tale that requires a bit of concentration. Set in the aftermath of the Civil War, it features KC as a war hero who is relocated to a post near a tribe of Sioux Indians. The initial grasp of the film makes you think it's going to be one with emphasis on the conflict involving the Sioux, and for the first part of the film, this is indeed how it is shown, particularly as KC's character, Lt Dunbar, is portrayed as an arrogant and selfish man, very naive in a way and also very much a Jobsworth. However, the film's progression sees us ...  Read the complete review

WHAT IS IT ABOUT: Kevin Costner stars as Lt John Dunbar, a hero of the American Civil War who travels to his new post on the Western frontier. At first an emotionless, up tight soldier, things soon change as he begins to interact with a tribe of Sioux Indians, causing him to re-evaluate his loyalties. WAS IT ANY GOOD: I just re-watched this last night, and have to say I still enjoyed it just as much as I did when it came out in 1990. Costner plays a very comfortable role for him - pensive, reluctant, withdrawn, all play into his strengths and he does a good job. Ironically, Dunbar in the first hour is a very unlikable guy - a nerd, a workaholic, a ...  Read the complete review

I have only just recently seen Dances with Wolves, I remember hearing about it when it came out in 90/91, but I really didn’t take much notice because I was young and foolish! This film probably shows Kevin Costner at the peak of his career. He became director and producer as well as assuming lead role as a Union solder, who, while badly injured shows an act of courage which earns him access to good the best physicians and the choice to be stationed wherever he chooses. He decides he would like to be thrown onto the edge of the frontier and finds himself alone at his deserted post. Through chance meetings with the local Sioux Indians and guidance from a ...  Read the complete review

This film is one which hubby really wanted to see but it had never really appealed to me but once I found out it was Kevin Costner who played the lead I was swayed slightly so decided to treat him to the DVD. John Dunbar is serving in the US Army and it is the 1860's. He gets badly injured and is told he will loose his foot. As a last resort he manages to get away from the hospital an makes his way to a post where the high ranking officers are and after he shows bravery and courage, he really just wanted to be killed, he is treated by their doctors and his foot and leg are saved. As a result he is promoted to Lieutenant and told he can serve at any post he ...  Read the complete review
