Advantages: great film, great cast, excellent storyline
Disadvantages: none
This is possibly one of the greatest movies of all time, and it is definetly a favourite of mine at christmas time when it's on the telly. Not many moves have the capability to move me like Dances With Wolves did, and that is probably why I think this is amazing. This epic film stars Kevin Costner who plays the part of Lieutenant John J Dunbar. It's about the story of a young American soldier who mans his post in the strange new lamd, the American frontier. He is rewarded for herosim in the Civil War battlefield by being able to choose what post he wants to man in the army (not much of a reward I thought). He chose the western frontier. When arriving on his post, he finds that it is deserted fort on the Dakota prairie. He accepts his duties as a solider and he decides to repair and clean up the fort and wait for reinforcements with his only companians, his horse and a curious wolf which he named two-socks. Also there are neighboring Sioux to look out for as they will kill him if they find him as a threat. After a few events, soldier and Sioux overcome their mutual distrust as Dunbar makes the first move as he proves his courage and the fact that not all soldiers (or at least him) mean them no harm and therefore he is accepted into the tribe. Through the friendship of a medicine man, he learns the way of the Sioux and through the friendship of a warrior, he finds the love of a remarkable woman. Dunbar finally finds that place in life where all the blanks are filled in as he loves the way of the Sioux and now he is forced to make the hardest choice of his life. He has to chose weather or not to join the losing battle of the indians or remian as the faithful and dedicated soldier he once was. If you haven't seen this movie yet, I think it is a definite must. I feel that this movie has deep emotional and powerful messages contained in it. I find it makes me feel more aware on the suitation between native Americans (indians) and the
'white man', just a pity it is too late. THis is definitely a movie for the entire family. In my opinion, towards the end of the movie, you will experience one of the most touching and memorable scenes in the movie making world.. Just as Dunbar is leaving the Winter camp and saying goodbye to the Sioux he loved so much forever, the voice of a past enemy screams through the air, bringing him to a halt. You see "Wind in His Hair' sitting on his pony on a mountain and he screams out his message that he could not deliver in person. I find that this makes a very touching ending. To find out what happens in the film and how Dunbar got the name 'Dances With Wolves', you'll have to watch it as it's one of the greatest movies of all time. My greatest thanks goes out to Kevin Costner for his amazing acting and to the author Micheal Blake. If my reveiw hasn't managed to make you feel like you have to watch this film, here is a little list of the awards Dances with wolves won: Academy Award: Best Picture Academy Award Best Directing: Kevin Costner Academy Award Original Score: John Barry Golden Globe Award: Best Motion Picture-Drama National Board of Review: D.W. Griffith Award for Best Picture Chicago Film Critics Association: Best Picture People Choice Awards: Best Picture American Indian Film Festival (San Francisco): Best Picture South Dakota Hall Of Fame: Inducted Kevin Costner I hope that you like this movie as much as I did.
