Dr Harry Walton is sent to Dante's Peak, a small town in rural America, to investigate some abnormal activity in a nearby volcano. He becomes convinced that the volcano is about to erupt, but as the town has now become a desirable place to live, his views are not politically welcome and his boss asks him to back off. Despite this, the attraction between Harry and local mayoress, Rachel Wando, grows. The story revolves around the fictional town of Dante's Peak which is located in the northern Cascade Mountains, the volcanologist Dr. Harry Dalton played by Pierce Brosnan is brought to the town to investigate volcanic activity. The town is about to receive an award for being "The second most desirable place to live in the US, population under 20,000" and is also celebrating its annual "Pioneer Days Festival". When it comes to Hollywood, movies are like residents on Noahs Ark - they come in twos. We have had Armageddon and Deep Impact both about asteroids. We also had Volcano and Dante's Peak. Volcano takes the typically Hollywood approach - big budget, special effects and a plot that is so ridiculous it is more like a comedy. Dante's Peak on the other hand is a far more realistic affair which makes it the better of the two.
