Advantages: Light hearted, very funny
Disadvantages: Some bad language
Being a big fan of 'Mock the Week', the satirical panel show, I had seen Dara O'Briain in action before, albeit only in a presenting postition. Although the members of the panel on the show are all brilliant comedians in their own right, Dara is often the one to get the biggest laughs, from his little comments from the host's chair.
I didn't realise he was also a stand-up comedian, so when I spotted this DVD I was intrigued to find out if he was as funny alone as he is when leading a panel!
The answer, in short, is yes. I was in stitches for most of the show, which lasted over an hour.
It was filmed at the Hammersnith Apollo, in front of a sell-out audience, so there is a great atmosphere, and O'Briain really lives up to expectations.
I don't want to ruin any jokes for people considered buying the DVD, but there are many high points in the show, especially when he improvises, using the audience and asking questions. My absolute favourite part is the encore - very clever!
As most will know, Dara is Irish, and there is a brilliant extra feature included taken from some of his live shows in Dublin, where he uses a lot of Irish slang, that many won't understand, but you can get the jist, and the atmosphere and reception from the audience is great!
There are also a couple more extra features, including a fun little piece with David Mitchell from Peep Show, which got me laughing a few times.
This is the first of Dara O'Briain's stand-up shows I've seen, and I would be keen to see more. He has proved he is more than just a quiz show host, and he can certainly hold his own going solo in these sort of venues.
Overall, a good value for money DVD, a decent length show, with a good few extras.
Definately one to pick up if you're looking for something light and funny to watch.
Summary: Dara does Stand-Up!

- 19/02/09 Dara is good but slightly over-rated. |

- 19/02/09 If you have a nice smile, can read autocue and have an Irish accent the BBC will employ you as a commedie, simple as. |
