Das Boot (Directors Cut) (DVD) ... Grönemeyer ... / DVD released 21 December, 1998 at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, Letterboxed, PAL, Widescreen / Wolfgang Petersen's harrowing and claustrophobic U-boat thriller Das Boot was released as both a theatrical film and a six-hour mini-series, and remains the most expensive production ever made by a German studio. The expanded "Director's Cut" of the movie was re-released 1997 and it is this version that is available for home viewing. This epic story became an instant classic on its first release, provoking critical and audience acclaim worldwide for its sympathetic and entirely truthful portrayal of a German U-boat crew. Faithfully adapted from the bestselling novel by Lothar-Günther Buchheim, Petersen and his committed cast (led by the amazing Jürgen Prochnow) were concerned to ensure that every detail was rendered with painstaking accuracy--both physical and psychological--and the result is not only the best submarine drama ever made but also arguably the finest cinematic portrait of men at war and the terrible madness they must endure. On the DVD: The 200-minute "Director's Cut" version of the movie not only has several major scenes restored that were not in the theatrical release but also has been digitally remastered with significantly improved sound (new sound effects have been added) and anamorphic picture. (The six-hour TV version has yet to be released.) Here, the viewer can watch the movie in the original German, with or without subtitles, or in an English dubbed version that uses the voices of many of the original cast. On the utterly engrossing commentary track, director Wolfgang Petersen and star Jürgen Prochnow talk animatedly and in great detail about every aspect of making this epic story--from model shots using Barbie dolls to meeting the Captain of the original U-boat. This is one of the most consistently rewarding commentaries on disc. Also included is a five-minute featurette that promotes this new version. --Mark Walker

... while trying to accomplish impossible missions - all the while trying to understand the reasons behind the war and the Nazi government that rules. Das Boot remains as one of the most claustrophobic film i have ever seen - the use of a handheld camera accurately depicts just how the life was like trying to live and work on board a vessel so narrow and tight. It gave audiences an uneasy feeling of panic everytime you saw one of the young germans have to squeeze around in the chamber like submarine, knowing that if anythi...more

Premium Review Das Boot (Directors Cut) (DVD): DAS BOOT NEEDS THE BOOT (332 words)

After watching U-571 for the first time (which I didn’t really like) – my step-dad brought his copy of Das Boot – the directors cut on DVD. He then preceded to tell me about the various versions of Das Boot there are, (surprisingly there are quite a few), yet this is one of the great versions as it is in it’s entirety and lasts for around three and a half hours. The film is situated on a U-97 and the crew that man it. There is nothing else you can say about the story-line really. There are depth charges surrounding them, they do their best to maneuver around them, with a do they survive or not element (I don’t want to ...  Read the complete review

It was only after watching my newly acquired copy of U-571 the other day that prompted me to dust-off my DVD of Das Boot (Director’s Cut) and give it another look. In the past, this movie has been seen in several formats. Serialised on BBC2 and in standard movie length being two of them. The DVD version runs for 200 minutes – and that’s just the movie! I suspect that this is closer in length to the TV mini-series in content than the normal movie. The advantage of the DVD format, is that you can hear the soundtrack dubbed into English, or for the purist, in German with or without English* subtitles, which is, of course, much ...  Read the complete review

THE FILM BACKGROUND INFORMATION Das Boot – a bit of a strange one this. I say that because this film, quite frankly is one of the best films ever made, yet few people seem to regard it as highly, that is until they watch and get to love this cinematic masterpiece! Certified as a 15 rating movie, and coming in at OVER three hours in length, this is no short nilly willy movie, but despite its length (which may be regarded to long for some) you cannot fail to enjoy this movie! FILM SYNOPSIS Filmed originally in 1985 and directed by Wolfgang Petersen, the acclaimed director of the wonderful Air force one (one ...  Read the complete review

One may wonder how a film portraying Germans under Nazi rule, manouevering one of the greatest threats to tankers in the 2nd world war..the U-boat, and making us feel sorry for them may have been released. Even though I share none of the Nazi ideals, this film is not about political beliefs, it is about people, it is about war. The film clearly shows how everyone is affected by the conflict that surrounds them, how each and every soldier wants the war to end, whether serving under Churchill or Hitler, people still die, the fight goes on. Our crew is aboard U-97, the tides have turned and the mighty U-Boat force is starting to suffer heavy losses, the allies no ...  Read the complete review

Das Boot is one of the most popular foreign films ever released in America and is also the most expensive German film to date at $12 million, it gives us the rare chance to see an insight into not only how war was like for the Germans but also it gives us a look into an area of war that hasn't yet been that well documented or filmed about in any decent way. It shows us first hand how, in almost documentary detail, how these submarines operated and remained professional under such incredible conditions while trying to accomplish impossible missions - all the while trying to understand the reasons behind the war and the Nazi government that rules.
