Dawn of the Dead [2004] (DVD) ... 25 October, 2004 at Entertainment in Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL, Widescreen / Are you ready to get down with the sickness? Movie logic dictates that you shouldn't remake a classic, but Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead defies that logic and comes up a winner. You could argue that George A. Romero's 1978 original was sacred ground for horror buffs, but it was a low-budget classic, and Snyder's action-packed upgrade benefits from the same manic pacing that energized Romero's continuing zombie saga. Romero's indictment of mega-mall commercialism is lost (it's arguably outmoded anyway), so Snyder and screenwriter James Gunn compensate with the same setting--in this case, a Milwaukee shopping mall under siege by cannibalistic zombies in the wake of a devastating viral outbreak--a well-chosen cast (led by Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, and Mekhi Phifer), some outrageously morbid humor, and a no-frills plot that keeps tension high and blood splattering by the bucketful. Horror buffs will catch plenty of tributes to Romero's film (including cameos by three of its cast members, including gore-makeup wizard Tom Savini), and shocking images are abundant enough to qualify this Dawn as an excellent zombie-flick double-feature with 28 Days Later, its de facto British counterpart. --Jeff Shannon

... very low expectations going in. Imagine my surprise when I actually enjoyed this remake that tampers with the formula of the original film but still manages to be a witty, thoroughly engaging film that doesn't lose sight of the apt social commentary of the original film. The film is paced lightning-fast, introducing us to Ana (Sarah Polley), who returns home to her husband, Luis, only to find the girl from next door infected with a virus, and within three minutes of the film starting, her husband has been ripped to pie...more

Premium Review Dawn of the Dead [2004] (DVD): Zombie Nation (1569 words)

Rating:

George A. Romero's 1978 horror classic 'Dawn of the Dead' is without doubt one of my favourite films of all time, when it was announced then that there was to be a remake I was absolutely dreading its release. I instantly dismissed it and decided that ultimately it would not be up to very much at all. As it turns out I was wrong and the 'Dawn of the Dead' remake is in fact fantastic, better than the original in some ways even. Slow zombies have been replaced with super fast, highly powerful flesh munching machines and for that reason it is all the more scary. The social satire element has been lessened, but the film itself is a punchier and in ways more powerful offering ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A great remake! (162 words)

Remakes. Everyone hates them, right? Not this one. It is one of the finest remakes made, especially of such a classic. The story is simple; world gets taken over by zombies, some survivors take over mall. Everyone knows it. The best thing about it is how they have their zombies. They modernise it but not so your left with computer made crap. They look realistic and make the movie just as scary as the original. You see in depth characters and feel a genuine sense of fear watching this movie. There are slight changes but not enough to ruin it, just enough to make it interesting. We first see a "Zombie" in the form of a little girl who walks into her parents room. ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Dawn of the Dead [2004] (DVD): What have we done to ourselves? (2233 words)

Introduction ------------ Having revived the zombie movie with Night of the Living Dead (referred to as Night from now on), George A Romero returned to the subject with 1978’s Dawn of the Dead. Taking place simultaneous with (or just shortly after) the events shown in Night, Dawn sees two members of a Philadelphia SWAT team and a TV news helicopter man and producer girlfriend flee the increasing chaos and hole up in a shopping mall. The Characters --------------- As with Night, Romero concentrates on just a few main characters. There’s Stephen (David Emge) and Peter (Ken Foree) – members of a SWAT team who become disillusioned trying to ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Who says remakes don't work? (2645 words)

Introduction ---------------- Dawn of the Dead is a remake of George A Romero’s classic 1978 zombie film of the same name. When I heard news of the remake, my initial reaction (as with most remakes) was “Why?”. It seemed both unnecessary and unwanted. Needless to say, when it was released, like the sucker I am, I still went to see it. So, is it worthy of the undoubted master of the zombie flick, or is it a putrid pile of fetid flesh that even the hungriest zombie would turn his nose up at? Dawn (1978) Vs. Dawn (2004) -------------------------------------- OK, first off, I am not going to compare the 2004 version with Romero’s original here, ...  Read the complete review

When young nurse Ana finishes work for the day, she's pretty tired. She's so tired she doesn't notice the sudden increase of patients being admitted to the hospital. She doesn't notice the fact that the ambulance drivers are far busier than they would normally be and she doesn't listen to the special announcement on the radio before she switches to her regular easy listening channel. When she gets home, there is an eerie calm about the neighbourhood but after sharing a shower with her husband, she gets into bed and drifts into a peaceful sleep. At 6:25 her husband is woken by the sound of the bedroom door slowly opening. As he opens his sleepy eyes, he makes ...  Read the complete review
