"Dawn of the Dead", the second of George Romero's zombie trilogy is a historical gore feast. Way ahead of its time for when it was made, this film still holds up today, in the year 2000 as a true riveting horror masterpiece. Focusing on four individuals who are attempting to flee the United States when they realise that the dead are over running the living. Led by David Emge and Ken Foree as two military officers, trained at survival the four seek refuge in a desolate shopping centre Forced to rely on their smarts and surroundings, the four attempt to do battle with the living dead and survive for themselves. Bloody and gory with its visuals, this film definitely ranks as a classic. Even today, the film serves as a great commentary on survival of the fittest. Not as ironic or as evil at its predecessor, "Night of the Living Dead", "Dawn of the Dead" still throws you into an evil world, where death can reach out and grab you from virtually anywhere. Providing scare after scare, in a very modern way, it is hard to believe this film is twenty-five years old. I rank this in my top three favourite zombie films (along with "Night of the Living Dead" and "Cemetery Man"). While Foree and Emge are strong heroic characters in this film, Romero personifies the shopping centre as the real star. A terrifically horrifying back drop for this film. The zombies themselves while nameless provide the viewer with a lasting impression of horror.
