In 1968 there was 'Night of the Living Dead', George A. Romero's first film as director which would spawn a number of sequels and inevitably remakes also. Although four films have since followed, it was not until ten years later in 1978 that the man followed it up with 'Dawn of the Dead', the first of the George A. Romero zombie films that I ever saw and one that fascinated me greatly. I stumbled upon this film by chance late one night and am extremely glad that I did so. 'Dawn of the Dead' is my favourite zombie film of all time and in my opinion by far the greatest film that George A. Romero has ever directed. Thirty years on from its release and 'Dawn ... Dawn Of The Dead 1978 shows the immediate aftermath of a zombie outbreak. More than a horror movie, it deals with human nature, survival & more. Not wanting to give the entire plot away - I will just say that centres around 4 survivors who seek shelter and protection from a shopping mall. ACTORS Can't really find any fault with the acting. I felt that each actor was right for the role. MAKEUP Obviously, being made in the 70's, the makeup & FX do seem quite aged - but I think it just makes DOTD78 more of a classic. LENGTH This movie is quite long - running over 2 hours which is perfect as ... Read the complete review

Sometime in the seventies, George A Romero was invited to visit Monroeville Mall, a new development near his home town of Pittsburgh. Romero was intrigued by this vast state of the art temple to consumerism and the additional crawlspaces and corridors it contained. The friend showing him around commented that the mall would be the perfect place to ride out an emergency and so planted the seed of an idea that became Dawn Of The Dead, a sequel to Romero's 1968 classic Night Of The Living Dead. Dawn Of The Dead begins in a fictional television station. Fran (Gaylen Ross), a worker at the station, wakes from what might possibly have been a nightmare. Reality ... Read the complete review

note: also appears in part on The Student Room and Flixster Although Night of the Living Dead is always going to be my favourite zombie film, Romero's follow up, Dawn of the Dead, is a fantastic sequel and a very close contender for the same title. The film involves planet Earth being overrun by the same zombie plague as in the first film. The main characters are two police officers (one played by Ken Foree, who played Kenan's dad in Kenan and Kel!), a helicopter pilot (called Flyboy), and his wife, who attempt to escape the zombie invasion and wind up at a huge shopping mall complex. Dawn of the Dead is an immensely influential film and one of the ... Read the complete review
