Four stars form me - Well worth a watch!

Well I have to admit I love action/disaster films and this is no exception, yes they can be a bit on the cheesy side but I just sit back, don't think too much and enjoy!

The plot of Daylight is as follows...

There are three trucks full of toxic waste which are being sent to be disposed of illegally. They are heading for New Jersey so have to go through a tunnel, at the same time some diamond thieves are being pursued by the NYPD they also head into the tunnel. The thieves are obviously driving dangerously as they try to escape capture. Soon the driver loses control, first hitting the tunnel wall and then crashing into one of the trucks causing an explosion. This ends up causing the roof of the tunnel to cave in and a fireball that rips through the tunnel.

At the Manhattan end of the tunnel, a former New York City Emergency Management Chief, Kit Latura is about to drive into the tunnel when the entrance suddenly collapses therefore blocking both ends. He sees an old colleague who informs him that the tunnel is extremely damaged. Rushing to speak to the tunnel administrators he knows that there is only one escape route but it has been too badly damaged to use. He decides to enter the tunnel anyway by way of the ventilation fans but they can only shut them down for so long so it's a one way trip.

Will he manage to get to the survivors and can they all make it out alive!

The film is £3.98 from Amazon, has a classification of 12 and the running time is 110 minutes. There aren't many special features on this DVD however there is the Cast and Filmmakers Biographies and also the Theatrical Trailer.

First of all I will say it has quite a predictable plotline but the characters are quite good and Sylvester Stallone plays the role of Kit really well. He is very watchable and even though some of the things that happen are a little cheesy the story still manages to flow really well. There are some really good supporting characters like the character of Madelyne played by Amy Brennerman I would class her as the love interest for the character of Kit. Also George Tyrell played by Stan Shaw provides quite an emotional scene in the movie.

The special effects are also quite good especially the fireball ripping through the tunnel this helps to make the film even more entertaining.

On the whole it may not be the best action film but it is still fun to watch just to see what will happen next. There is also the odd one liners which provide a few cheesy comic moments. As long as you don't take it too seriously this film is well worth watching and for just under four pound I would say it's worth buying it.

For a good old fashioned disaster/action film give Daylight a go!

      overall an excellent movie 9/10

      INTRODUCTION

Daylight is one of many American made disaster flick, which is a great watch for fans of this genre, however don't let this put you off if you are not the biggest fan of disaster flick movies , this film is actually a pretty good watch. The movie was released in 1996 and the main role of this action packed movie is played by Sylvester Stallone as Kit Latura.

      FILM INFORMATION:

      Certificate: 12
      Director: Rob Cohen
      Written by: Leslie Bohem
      Release: 1996
      Running time: 115 Minutes
      Country: USA
      Language: English
      Budget: $80,000,000

MY PERSONAL VIEWS ON THE FILM:

I first saw Daylight around nine years ago when i was about (7-8) on the TV and i got my parents to tape it, i can safely say that that video cassette was unplayable within a few weeks from constant use.

The Film although has raised some negativity surrounding acting, plot and other issues is actually an excellent movie if you look past these minor draw backs.

The movie delivers an action packed script and keeps you on the edge of your seat from the beginning through till the end, its exactly how it is on the cover, so don't expect an 11 Oscar winner movie here, just appreciate it for what it is, and i am sure you will enjoy it time and time again.

      PLOT (FIRST HALF) (SPOILER WARNING)

The script starts off at a dockland area where its apparent that a dodgy operation is going on which involves toxic chemicals being loaded onto trucks which are to be transported to an unknown location and dumped illegally...

The film touches on a few characters lives before the major disaster happens such as Maddie, a woman with not much going for her in life, a small dirty flat in inner city crime ridden new york, who is driven to the edge and decides to pack up and leave, and Kit latura who appears to be a taxi driver...

Now a group of jewel thief's attack a man in his car who has just purchased a magnitude of expensive diamonds, the thieves steal the motor + the jewels, unbeknown to them the car has a tracking device which notifies them that they are being traced, which becomes evident when police cars start following them....

At this point the thieves take a violent right and head for the 'Tunnel of love' which happens to be at the same time as the dangerous chemicals being transported, this spells disaster and ends up in multiple explosions causing both ends of the tunnel to cave in...

A bunch of survivors are trapped in the sealed tunnel, which happens to be under 72 feet of water, lack of oxygen, dangerous chemicals being released and a multitude of other problem.

Kit Latura who used to be the head of the emergency department who was fired due to an earlier incident in his career which got a lot of people killed, wants to help and explains he will go down their via the fan system.

From there on the action really does begin, and he sure as hell won't give up until he has got these people to daylight!

      CHARACTERS:

The main characters are the group of survivors and Kit Latura who i will go into some detail about next:

Kit Latura - The hero and dare devil of the movie who makes it his mission to enter the tunnel and bring the group of trapped survivors to daylight, Kit has a history of emergency & disaster management, however this history includes a very negative story involving the death of many people in Kits hands.

The group of trapped survivors as a whole - To be honest i think this is the downfall of the movie, there is no real like abilities in the majority of the characters which means it doesn't really bother you if they make it out or alive and as a result doesn't help with the suspense factor.

      DOES THE FILM WORK WELL?

Yes i believe that the creators of daylight although haven't created a huge in depth masterpiece, have produced a high quality conventional US disaster movie which serves its purpose of 115 minutes of action, explosions, survival methods and more!...

      LIKE ABILITIES OF THE FILM:
      -Great range of action
-Easy to follow yet interesting plot
      -Goes straight into the action
      -A good ending

      DIS-LIKE ABILITIES OF THE FILM:
      -Majority of characters

IF I COULD MAKE ONE IMPROVEMENT WHAT WOULD IT BE?

-I would make the characters more grateful and likeable, Kit was not physically trapped in the tunnel when this happened, he decided to risk his own life for the welfare of others and enter the tunnel via the fan system, however most of the characters were rude, wanted to take charge and wouldn't let him help which i think is the biggest downfall of the movie

Therefore a change in this would raise suspense levels and make viewers actually interested in aspects of the film such as wanting characters to survive, rather than thriving on just the action of it all

      IS IT WORTH A BUY?/CONCLUSION

Overall this is an excellent disaster movie which is better than many others in my opinion, i have watched this film probably over a hundred times in my life (due to when i was young) and even now when i rarely watch it its still a great watch

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

It's worth a watch for the fan scene alone.

I do like this film. It's had its fair share of criticism, and at specific points in the story it's understandable to see why; though, with that aside, Daylight is actually a really engaging piece of action/disaster cinema, with Sly Stallone expressing signs of the kind of emoting he did in Rocky, and even Lock Up.

Stallone stars as Kit Latura, a disgraced former head of Emergency Medical Services, who happens to be at hand when the Manhattan tunnel to New Jersey collapses from an explosion of toxic waste trucks. Survivors are trapped somewhere in the middle of the wreckage, and it becomes a race against time for Kit to save those people before the icy waters of the Hudson River flood inwards from above.

It's all pretty much predictable, with the usual cliché characters, of whom become increasingly annoying as the story develops. To be honest, there were some really cringe worthy moments- I mean, there was Stallone (a real nice guy), busting his balls to save all those trapped people, and all they seemed to do was pick fault with what he was doing. Because of such, I didn't care whether the other characters lived or died; though, I would've much preferred the latter.

Fortunately, Stallone is much more believable and inspirational in his character than the others, and holds it all together. The effects are also impressive, and there are some particularly exhilarating moments of action; particularly, when Stallone has to go through a series of four giant exhaust fans to get to the people below. It really is a brilliant scene, and gets my vote as one of the best action scenes of the 90s.

Granted, Daylight didn't win any Oscars, but that doesn't mean to say it isn't enjoyable. It's worth a watch for the fan scene alone.

        Good film

After a fatal explosion in a commuter tunnel main character Kit Latura played by sylvester Stallone faces a race against time as he tries to lead a group of survivors to safety.
The group trying to escape the fire, toxic fumes and water includes a family and an old man who does not want to give up his beloved dog. Stallone plays a good role in this film has he tries to prevent furhter disaters from occuring.
The film has some really good action scenes in it and keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering who if any of the survivors will come out of the tunnel alive.
The film is rated 12 as it has some sensitive parts to it. I personally feel the film is a good watch, most Stallone films are though to be fair to him. He keeps the heart pounding intensity at the forefront and keeps the wathcers intrigued.

          Disadvantages

A decent action/disaster film from Rob Cohen and Sly Stallone

The mid-1990s were good for a number of situation disaster films before the tradegy of 9-11 stopped the majority of film makers from using this as a basis for their movies. One such film was the 1996 actioner Daylight, where Sly Stallone headed the bill as the disgraced ex-Chief of the Emergency Medical Services who has to be the hero.

The ex-Chief is Kit Latura, driving through the tunnel under the Hudson when a runaway car causes an explosion, blocking off both ends of the tunnel and trapping a number of people inside with a limited supply of air. As time runs out, Kit must find a way out before the air runs out and they all die.

Director Rob Cohen gives us a harmless action film here in Daylight. Utterly unbelievable, and with some dodgy acting, but this was part of the run of the 90s' disaster flicks - they defied science in the anme of entertainment. Stallone does okay, and was hot enough following a run of ups and downs to provide a good enough performance for the film. He is ably supported by Amy Brennerman and Viggo Mortensen, and the remainder of the cast do a decent job too.

The special effects on the whole are very well done, and the filming had to be spot on for the underground trapped scenes so that we could see what was going on but still believe they were trapped in an underground airtight tunnel. Dispelling all kinds of scientific arguments is a must for watching this film - the unlikelihood of some of the scenes is high, and you just have to put it out of your mind and fill it with the harmless action and suspense instead.

Not a great film, but it does okay and entertains for its duration. The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £3.98. The copy I have doesn't have any extras.

Driving through a tunnel can seriously damage your health...

          Director: Rob Cohen
Producers: John Davis, David T. Friendly and Joseph Singer.
          Writer: Leslie Bohem.
Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Amy Brenneman, Viggo Mortensen, Dan Hedaya, Jay O Sanders, Stan Shaw, Claire Bloom, Karen Young and Danielle Harris.

Released in late 1996 this all action disaster movie concentrated most of its efforts on the survival of a handful of people trapped underground.

          **BRIEF PLOT**

With a fleeing gang of jewel thieves and a couple of trucks filled with some dodgy chemical on the way to be illegally dumped it is not long before the two meet in the middle of a New Jersey tunnel, leading to one hell of a nightmare for everyone driving through the tunnel at the time.

With many exploding vehicles the tunnel begins to collapse and it is not long before both ends are blocked off , leaving several people still alive but trapped in the middle, fearing for their lives as the tunnel walls begin to show signs of weakening further.

Unfortunately for the survivors the air in the tunnel is soon becoming more poisonous, what with the Carbon monoxide levels rising and fires burning wildly along the tunnel, the rescue team have no option but to send in someone to try to stop the poisonous fumes from killing them all.

Enter the ever so ready action hero and godsend Kit Latura, (played by Sylvester Stallone), a rescue expert with many years experience.

His plan is to reach the survivors, via the labyrinth of service tunnels and bring them all out safely......

          **IN CONCLUSION**

It is not a bad movie, having plenty of action and a bit of suspense, as you watch the people in the tunnel try to survive long enough to see daylight again.

The opening scenes, with the police chase and the lorry loads of toxic chemicals, the movie gets straight to the point, with the simplicity of how certain events can cause so much disaster.

Stallone plays his usual style as the action hero with attitude and a skill of surviving what would normally kill any mere mortal, it is like Rambo in a tunnel.

It is the type of movie which sees a group of strangers become united in danger and work as a tem to reach there goal, watching how the rich, the poor, the young and the old join forces and become one, watching as the group deal with one life threatening problem only to stumble across another.

The story line was well written, if a little slow in parts as the audience is introduced briefly to the tunnel dwelling characters.
Stallone plays his usual style as the action hero with attitude and a skill of surviving what would normally kill any mere mortal.

The movie has everything a good movie requires to keep the audience entertained, it has the action, the drama, the standard car chase, together with some great explosions and cracking stunts. What more can you get in an entertaining movie.

          Would I recommend it...?
I would have to say yes.
It is worth watching at least once even if you think Stallone is a bit of a dodgy actor.
The story is well written, if not original, and the action can be gripping in parts.

Give it a go...you may enjoy it.

            Advantages

Firstly i want to say that the copy of the dvd i bought was region1 and it was instantly noticeable just by the extras on the dvd itself,Color, Closed-captioned, Widescreen anamorphic format, Dolby, Production notes. Theatrical trailer, Audio commentary by director Rob Cohen, Documentary "The Making of Daylight" featuring interviews with Rob Cohen, Sylvester Stallone, Amy Brenneman and producer Raffaella De Laurentiis, Storyboards Production designs and photographs, An electronic press kit, Original advertising concepts and campaigns, Music video Whenever There Is Love, Widescreen anamorphic format Everything but the kitchen sink, the dvd is pure brilliant quality in its content and editing. The acting is perfect and brilliant camerawork gives a real taste of the fear that is felt in extrordinary circumstances and the suspense can overcoming at times. A film that once i start to watch i cant stop till its over No point saying too much because most of you have seen this one. heres a bit on the movie, It all starts with a car chase at the beginning , Inside the Holland Tunnel already there are some army lorries carrying chemicals in drums. Well theres a crash which results in a tremendous explosion with a humongous fireball destroying everything in its wake. Well old Sly turns up as the tunnel collapses and it turns out hes an ex member of NYs EMS, After a bit of a tussle he eventually gets them to allow him to enter the tunnel, the only way in is to shut off the fans temporarily , for him to climb in before they cut back in. Luckily for him he just makes it. When he gets into the tunnel the scene awaiting him is of sheer destruction, survivors are few and far between for the sher amount of traffic that was in the tunnel. He manages to get them all together and they start looking for a way out. However this aint easy as the water level is rising and so is the tension too. People are almost
at breaking point but not wanting thiings to fall apart he struggles to keep things together. Slowely people are dying as they try various ways to get out because time is getting short. One bit especially is where the security gaurd has had his back broken so they all banded together to get him free and strapped to a board. They have to dive underwater and they know its the end for him, he then asks sly to give a message to his wife . The drama at this point can be so intense its almost as if you are there in the tunnel with them. After a long struggle they eventually find a way out but suddenly the walkway collapses leaving them stranded . So Kit decides the only thing to do is blow the roof and hope that they,ll make it up through the opening to saftey. Only thing is when it goes off kit get trapped in the mud and silt but after all that hard work he makes it up. Stallone plays an excellent part in this movie , one of his best acting roles ever along with the amount of amazing special effects and suspense that this film creates - its enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. This is one action/disaster movie that is definately worth having, the dvd itself is of excellent quality. Daylight is set in New York tunnels after both ends collapse during a getaway chase. The hero of the day, who is......Stallone has to then take control and save the day and everybody in the tunnel. It's actually not a bad film. It's an interesting idea not seen very often. Stallone actually plays the part quite ok, and the film production qualities are above average. It won't stand out as the best film you'll ever see, but it won't be on your worst list either. It is a little predictable at times, but then most action films like this are...

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

This film was meticulously crafted to the established disaster movie recipe. That recipe demands a handsome but misunderstood hero, a pretty girl for him to rescue, a good but not particularly likeable person who will die on cue and of course, a spectacular disaster. That is exactly what is served up here. The scenario is that the Holland Tunnel has collapsed at both ends because of a multiple vehicle pile up that involved some highly flammable waste being carried illegally through the tunnel. The requisite set of characters are trapped inside the tunnel and have to find a way out. Time pressure is added by the fact that the tunnel is not going to keep the water out forever and Stallone has to find a way out through long forgotten passages in order to save himself and the girl. If you are a disaster movie fan, you are sure to like this film because it passes all of the standard disaster movie tests. However, there is nothing in the film that can give it a wider appeal than that. The special effects for the explosion in the tunnel are very good indeed but the impact of those effects fades with time as new films go further with better technology. The things which make a film last are missing here. You can be pretty sure about who will escape and who will perish so there is no suspense. Also, despite a setting with a lot of potential, there is no real atmosphere. A lot of that is down to the script and acting both of which are pretty pedestrian. As a result, I can only recommend this movie to disaster film buffs and Stallone fans

This is a reasonably paced disaster movie. The characters on the whole are pretty two-dimensional with the exception of Stallone. The premise is that there has been an explosion in the Hudson Tunnel (forgive me if I've got the wrong tunnel) and Stallone a former Rescue Chief goes in to rescue some survivors. The pace is fast and at points can be pretty nerve-wracking although there is still plenty of opportunity to play “Spot the people who aren’t going to make it”. As with the Die Hard films some traditional rules of cinema are broken (e.g. Good Guys don’t always survive) which make for interesting twists. All in all not a bad film about an 7½ on the film watchability chart.

Sylvester Stallone stars in this disaster film as an ex medical services cheifwho goes nto an underwater bridge when it collapses and starts to leak water. When he goes in he cannot get out through the two sides f the tunnel as theyare blocked. This is a great movie which I thoroughly enjoyed and i'd loveto see it again. This film also stars the wonderful Amy Brenneman. Based ona Rob Cohen book it is just like I thought it would be. Great

Yes.This film did deserve to see the light of day. It is another of those films which is fun to watch but has no deep meaning and anything else. This is one of few Action movies in which Guns aren't a major part of the thrills(Which makes a change). Stallone is a rescue guy(Ala Cliffhanger) who isn't working at the moment(Ala Cliffhanger). He has to step in to save a load of people who are trapped in a flooding tunnel(Ala Cliffhanger. Well sort of). It has a fair bit of action which is satisfying enough. It is a return to the disaster flicks of the seventies. The towering Inferno and The Poseidon adventure spring to mind. This film resembles The Poseidon adventure most as it contains alot of water. Rent this out for entertainment value but don't expect it to change your life.

Although this film is about four years old it is one of Stallones latest offerings and its not all bad. The film is about a tunel under the sea which has a huge explosion and lots of people die. Some people survive but there all traped, what will they do. Well its lucky Stallones on hand to save the day. As you can see the plot is a little bit on the basic side but if you go to see a Stallone film what do you expect. You expect action and this has it in abundunce. The people trapped in the tunnel have limited time before it all collapses so Stallone enevitable goes down to rescue them. There are many obsticales along the way. The person everone hates dies, they all then pull together to save the policeman but tragically he has to be left behind. As you can see this film is full of cliches. If you like Stallone films or Cliffhanger which is very similar come watch this. If you like films with a good plot, good acting and doesn't rely on lots of stunts and special effects do not watch this, I repeat do not watch this because you will hate it.

This echo of 1970s disaster films stars Sylvester Stallone as the disgraced former head of New York City's Emergency Medical Services, a loser who is nevertheless a compulsive rescuer of people in danger. When the Holland Tunnel is sealed off after a fiery explosion and car passengers are trapped within, he goes inside and leads a group of survivors (a mixed group allegorically representing America's diversity) through all manner of pestilence toward safety. Directed by the imaginative Rob Cohen (Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story), Daylight finds Stallone outrageously (and to almost campy effect) pushing the envelope of his martyr persona to near-religious levels. He throws himself, quite literally, into this part and between that entertainment factor and the unnervingly convincing effects, this is a pretty watchable film.--Tom Keogh
