I first saw this film when I was in the summer holidays between high school and university. What a perfect time to see this film. Looking back, this was a great time in my life. It may be my fond memories of this period that have influenced my feelings towards this movie. After all, having studied film at university for four years, I am well enough trained in my craft to know that this film is nothing if not average in terms of its production and its scripting. This should just be another boring 'coming of age' movie, yet for me this one stands out in the crowd. This movie personifies so much of what I love about the movie industry - the magic! The spark that ... Read the complete review

It was not my intent to write today. After work, I planned on relaxing while watching a movie. While watching that movie, inspiration hit me. It festered until it had to be released. The year is 1976. Following the loss that was the Vietnam War (not covered in the film), there was a lag, which became confusion in general and personal identity. Represented are conflicting thoughts scattered throughout the ensemble, which combined to symbolize society and its expectations with the relation of individual consciousness. The balance of the represented characters are American teenagers on their final day of their 2nd to last year of high school. Each pivotal part ... Read the complete review

Directed by Richard Linklater and released in 1993, Dazed and Confused is an excellent teen movie set in the mid 1970s. The first thing you notice about the movie is how brilliantly it captures the sense of the era. I mean, it actually feels like it could have been shot at the time it was set. This may have more to do with its low budget than anything else, but still along with the well-picked 70s soundtrack it creates a great atmosphere throughout. The film centers around a big group of schoolkids in America. Unlike some teen films, where everyone seems to be the same age (in reality their late 20s!!), the characters are from a variety of school ... Read the complete review

This film tells the underside of American Graffiti. In a small town, classes get let out for the summer, and upperclassmen go looking for next year’s new high school students, so they can paddle them, as a sort of initiation. We follow a large number of teen-agers, boys and girls, popular and not, “good” and “troubled”, as they drive aimlessly around town, drink beer, hang out, trade adolescent life-truths, lust, experiment with sex, fight, and in general try to invest their passage into adulthood with a significance it does not have. This film is not about whether the hero gets the girl, or the nerd looses his virginity, ... Read the complete review

Starring: Jason London, Joey Lauren Adams, Milla Jovovich Director: Richard Linklater Released: 1993 Set in the last "daze" of school in 1976, this film perfectly captures the spirit and fashions of the time. Actually supposed to be over the last 24hrs of the last day of term before summer, the film plods merrily along, just like a hot summer day in Texas where it is set. Drinking beer and smoking pot feature large. As do the 'paddles' that the freshmen are initiated with! This film is Wayne's World or Bill and Ted for real. These are true 'slackers' (The title of Linklater's first film). The film like the slackers ... Read the complete review
