Advantages: It's a a low-budget US film., It's not a high-budget arty-farty magazine!
Disadvantages: Floats about a bit like the stoners in it.
Starring: Jason London, Joey Lauren Adams, Milla Jovovich
Director: Richard Linklater
Released: 1993
Set in the last "daze" of school in 1976, this film perfectly captures the spirit and fashions of the time. Actually supposed to be over the last 24hrs of the last day of term before summer, the film plods merrily along, just like a hot summer day in Texas where it is set.
Drinking beer and smoking pot feature large. As do the 'paddles' that the freshmen are initiated with! This film is Wayne's World or Bill and Ted for real. These are true 'slackers' (The title of Linklater's first film). The film like the slackers that make up its cast of characters float through the narrative. For what its worth! There seems little point to the story, more a slice of life than a structured narrative here. But well done all the same.
Reminicent of Bevis 'n' Butthead, this is a postmodern piece set in a period before the term was even invented. A film of the here and now with flares, tank-tops and floral shirts. So roll a joint, sit back chill out, and check it out dude.
With a hard rocking soundtrack that blasts you from every 8-Track, in every Chevy, in almost every scene. School is well and truly out for summer!
