A video nasty from 1981, Dead and Buried is a big-budget American horror which is a bit too respectable to sit with the sleazy dregs that make up most of the nasties list. It was re-released pretty quickly after the video nasty furore had died down without anyone really caring. It's made with a great deal of technical proficiency and professionalism; whether this makes it more or less interesting than the other nasties is debatable, though. I saw this film again last night, for the first time in many years, and was very impressed by how well it had aged. I still found it to be a creepy classic, which successfully mixes a slow-burning atmosphere with some effective gore scenes. The film is set in Potter's Bluff, a small seaside town in that popular heartland of horror, New England, USA. Far from being a friendly, quaint little village, Potter's Bluff has been the scene for a series of odd deaths, mostly of strangers or vagrants who are unfortunate enough to pass through the area.
