Dead Or Alive (DVD) ... Ishibashi ... / DVD released 24 June, 2002 at Tartan Video / Features of the DVD: PAL / The director of Dead or Alive, Takashi Miike, made his name on the international scene with Audition, a chilling psychological thriller that builds from a quiet start towards a prolonged torture sequence almost too unbearable to watch. But such deliberate pacing isn't typical of Miike, whose movies often assault the viewer with an onslaught of slam-bang action that makes John Woo look like Eric Rohmer. Dead or Alive, his most successful cops-vs-yakuza thriller to date, kicks off with six non-stop minutes of machine gun-paced violence, sex and slaughter, all set to a pounding heavy-metal beat. Thereafter things calm down a little, though not much. Given Miike's penchant for murky, livid-toned visuals and skewed camera angles, it's not always too easy to work out exactly who's doing what to whom, but the general outline's clear enough. The Tokyo underworld is being torn apart by a turf war between the yakuza gangs and the invading Chinese triads. Ambitious yakuza member Ryuichi isn't above playing both sides off against each other in his bid for power, while police detective Jojima, himself none too scrupulous in his methods, is out to destroy the gangs. Into this conventional plot framework Miike piles enough warped characters and bizarre, twisted happenings to fuel half-a-dozen Tarantino movies, while cheerfully borrowing--and inflating--key moments from such hard-boiled gangster-noirs as The Big Heat and Kiss Me Deadly. One character deep-fries his own hand, a stripper is drowned in a paddling-pool filled with her own excrement, and the literally apocalyptic finale, the showdown to end all showdowns, will leave you gasping. The appallingly prolific Miike, who regularly makes about five movies a year, has since directed two sequels--the first only three months after the original.--Philip Kemp

... being anything other than at best a pest and at worst vermin. I have seen at first hand what happens when a fox gets in amongst the chickens. It does not just take what it needs for food it kills and rips apart every hen or bird that it can lay hold of and leaves them dead or horribly wounded. Foxes will also take if they can new born lambs. The fox population has grown to the extent that we are now seeing them casually wandering around towns they are quite often badly infected with Mange and are infested with fleas...more

Foxhunting is back in the news again as the Scottish parliament votes almost overwhelmingly to ban the sport. I will use the word “sport” throughout the opinion, judge for yourself whether it is a sport or not at the end. You only have to look at the sheer number of opinions that have been written on DooYoo alone on this topic to realise that this is a topic which stirs up the passions. Some would have us believe that this sport is nothing short of barbarism whilst others eschew the rights of the enthusiast to pursue his sport in the same way as those who follow a football team. Originally hunting was a noble sport, the pursuit of Kings ...

The most interesting debate over democracy has always been where does the will of the majority end and the rights of the minority begin. On no issue is this more relevant than on the banning of hunting with dogs. An overwhelming majority (more than ¾ in every poll conducted) support the a ban on fox hunting and hence, the argument goes, in a democratic society the majority view must prevail. However, an important aspect of democracy is toleration, and it could be argued that the majority has no right to enforce its will over the minority. Those who wish to continue to allow hunting with dogs argue that society should tolerate their activities even if they do ...

I thought long and hard before writing here. I rarely venture into the forum debates but as the sports guide I have the great honour of reading all the opinions that come through this category. The foxhunting debate has become one of the hot topics and raises many emotions on all sides. So why did I feel wary of coming here? Well firstly it is such an emotive issue, and one where the often stiff medium of words on screen don't do it justice. Secondly and following on from the emotional stance I studied the sociology of sport and read many of the historical studies on fox hunting. Add to this the fact I from a farming background and I can swing from the ...
