... dark humour. Leading lady Jaime Winstone leads a fine cast that summarise that essence of Big Brother, creating true to life characters that react believably to the given situation. 'Dead Set' leads the way as one of the first televised horror series' in years, in par with BBC's 'Being Human'. Dead Set follows the development of the Zombie's of the new age, as seen in Danny Boyle's British epic horror '28 days later'. The special effects of Dead Set are presented fantastically, creating some truly horrifically gory m...more

Premium Review Dead Set (DVD): Dead Certified (437 words)

Having gone over the various zombie flicks you tend to notice one particular line that gets used 98% of the time "Shoot 'em in the head". A fine way to explain how easy it really is to destroy a reanimate. But then again if your in britain, guns will come few and far between. This is of course partial to do with what happens in this blood-drenched gore-fest that is Dead-set. Written by all-round narcissistic funny man Charlie Brooker, The 4 part survival horror starts off in the big brother house, where several wannabe celeb-plebs go on with there everyday lives inside a reality show. Its eviction night and one will be leaving to experience fame or ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dead Set: Yet another programme about zombies (312 words)

Rating:

Dead set is a series produced by channel 4 depicting the typical scenario of an apocolytic world getting over run by zombies. The Programme is a bit of a stereotype as it follows the typical stroyline of following a group of people and their bid for survival opting for quite a pessimistic ending. The said group are infact contestants of the channel 4 phenomanon 'big brother' who manage to hold up sucessful refuge (for a while) in the big brother house. Aside from the few cameo appearences (Davina McCall) this programme offers all you'd expect to find in a movie like this; horrible looking dead people feasting on those still alive and a desperate group of ...  Read the complete review

As a fan of Charlie Brooker's misanthropic rantings and witty insights into the world of the media i was looking forward to his take on Big brother and zombie movies. The DVD is divided into 4 parts each about 40 minutes in length. I watched the first part "You have to get them in the head" two nights ago. I was entertained and impressed by the dialogue and amused by the satirising of Big Brother and its production methods. The Big Brother contestants were believable as the usual bunch of wankers with one dissenting voice thrown in for entertainment value, the sleazy director was quite funny too. As with all zombie movies it takes most people a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dead Set - Series Only (1038 words)

Rating:

Charlie Brooker's Dead Set is a strange, exceptional, wholly unexpected piece of work. It has all of the misanthropy, bile and spectacularly foul wordplay of his underrated Chris Morris collaboration Nathan Barley, it has all of the wit and the critical smarts of his Guardian column and his BBC4 Screen Wipe, and it has all of the oh-my-God-did-I-just-see-that gore of a hundred Fulci pictures. It is harsh, uncompromising, extraordinarily violent and absolutely hilarious. Brilliant, in other words, although one says that with a few reservations. Originally broadcast as 5 20-odd minute episodes (the 45 minute opener excepted), Dead Set ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dead Set (DVD): Brainzzzz on the Set Menu (815 words)

I spend my days preparing for the inevitable zombie apocalypse. In every town that I have lived I have established a base which I will go to and protect. Usually this is in the form of a local supermarket or corner store with minimal entrance points and plenty of food stuffs. In one case this store was next to the local gun shop so for approximately 18 years I was fully prepared for hell to become full and the dead to walk the Earth. My theory is that no matter how the zombies rise - magic, genetic meddling, meteor showers etc. they all must burn some form of carbon. You can't stumble around murmuring about brains all day without the basic principles of energy use. ...  Read the complete review
