Premium Review Dead Silence (DVD): Scary and original - Worth a watch (165 words)

Rating:

I loved this film but I am a horror fan and love a good story! This is no oscar winner but a good watch nonetheless. Its stars Ryan Kwanten (Vinnie from Home & Away) & Donnie Wahlberg so not A List but not Z List either! I am a big fan of James Wan's films, Saw is a good example of his work. This isnt as gruesome as Saw and there are times when you want to scream at the screen ("Dont do that" and so on!) but that is typical of any horror film. I won't bore you with the story, rent it out and give it a go but the jist is ventriloquist dummies, tongues being ripped out and a woman called Mary Shaw who incidently is very scary. Fab twist which left us ...  Read the complete review

When Jamie and Ella Ashen hear a knock at the door late one evening, they are both surprised to find a large, wrapped box on the doorstep. When they carry the box indoors, they are even more surprised to find that their gift is a large and rather creepy-looking ventriloquist's dummy. Propping him up on the bed, they pay the macabre mannequin no further attention and return to their plans for food and drink. Later that evening whilst waiting for Jamie to arrive home from the Chinese takeaway, Ella finds herself overcome by a strange, eerie silence, broken only by strange noises coming from the bedroom where the dummy had previously been deposited. When Jamie comes home ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dead Silence (DVD): A total disaster (304 words)

note: also appears in part on Flixster and The Student Room Dead Silence is a horror film that is directed by James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell, who did the same respective jobs on the first Saw film. While they lucked out once, it appears they should probably stick to that sort of horror film, because if Dead Silence is any indication, their range is very broad even within the hokey confines of the horror genre. This is a terrible horror film that has a few ounces of B-movie charm, but not enough to see it through. Premium Review How can a ventriloquist dummy be scary? (754 words)
by - written on 12/01/09 (Very useful, 176 readings)
Rating:

One of several horror films I got my horror mad girlfriend for Christmas, the main motivation for buying this was from having seen that it involved ventriloquists dummies, which are far as my girlfriend and I are concerned, are creepy scary objects at the best of times, so when used in a horror film, should provide some serious creepiness.... we were not wrong. The film opens with a young couple, Jamie and Ella receiving a strange, large parcel out of the blue, with nothing more than Jamies name on the wrapping. In the parcel is a box containing a ventroliquists dummy. The couple are rather confused as to where it has come from but it reminds Ella of an old ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dead Silence (DVD): Silence is deadly (641 words)

If you've read any of my other recent reviews, you might have noticed that I've been watching a lot of crappy horror movies lately. Dead Silence is the latest of those. Upon watching it all I was expecting was a film about ventriloquist's dummies, which let's face it, are pretty creepy. It's been ages since a film has actually delivered something to scare me, so there was definite potential. At the start of the film Jamie (Ryan Kwanten - Home & Away, Flicka), receives a mysterious package containing the spooky puppet, with no note explaining who it was from. His wife Ella (Amber Valletta - Hitch, What Lies Beneath), joked around with the doll ...  Read the complete review
