An asteroid is headed toward the earth that is so big it is classed as an ELE - Extinction Level Event. That's all you need to know really, it's an 'end of the world film' you could argue if you've seen one you've seen them all but I personally love them. Anyway you get the idea; will they be able to stop the extinction of the human race? Tea Leoni (The Family Man) takes on one of the lead roles, playing a journalist who is covering the whole thing. She put's in a great performance, with a multi dimensional character that has her own personal issues to deal with- on top of a large comet coming to wipe out the whole of mankind! Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings) ... Read the complete review

When both Armageddon and Deep Impact were released in 1998, I did briefly fear that Hollywood had been tipped off by the American government that something was about to happen and they were softening the world up for the news. Both movies were about the impending arrival of a meteor, which would mark the extinction of mankind. However, where Armageddon went for action as hugely enjoyable as that was – Deep Impact went for a more realistic approach. Background ********** Amateur astronomer Leo Biederman, a teenager played by Elijah Wood (later to become Frodo Baggins in Lord of the Rings) discovers a new comet in the sky. He contacts a ... I realise that this was shown the other night on BBC1 and I had good intentions to post this opinion BEFORE it was shown. Sadly alas, revision had to take priority! ~ Background info ~ Released: 1998 Genre: According to Dooyoo its a Sci Fi and fantasy (although that really is debatable. It is NOT science fiction). I’d class it as an action adventure. Runtime: 135 mins Rating: PG ~ Cast ~ Morgan Freeman, Robert Duvall, Tea Leoni, Elijah Wood, Leelee Sobieski ~ Directed by ~ Mimi Leder ~ Synopsis ~ A group of teenagers that belong to an astronomy club are out stargazing ... As in Armageddon, this is a film about a comet heading towards the earth. We send up a team of experts to try and blow the asteroid apart with a nuclear device. This is where the two films differ. Whereas Armageddon was an all out action film, Deep Impact is more of a drama which focusses on certain characters (Leo who discovers the comet and the reporter who accidentally discovers the story) on the events up to the comets arrival. We see the strife of leo as he gives up his chance of survival in a bunker to go back and get his girlfriend and also we see how the reporter and her estranged father eventually find each other again. I saw Deep Impact at the cinema when it was first released, sometime in 1997, and recall thinking it was abysmal. Having seen it on BBC1 last night I felt I had to change my opinion, only marginally and move towards describing it as ‘disappointing’ – but please bare in mind I am not a fan of action films, perhaps it would appeal more to action fans. For those that haven’t seen it (lucky you) the plot is very simple. A comet (large enough to destroy our planet) is found to be on collision course with Earth, the film is all about how humanity deals with the situation. The plot is divided into three. The first is the obvious, where a ... Read the complete review
