Advantages: Brilliant acting, Stunning SFX
Disadvantages: may not be enough action for some
As in Armageddon, this is a film about a comet heading towards the earth. We send up a team of experts to try and blow the asteroid apart with a nuclear device. This is where the two films differ. Whereas Armageddon was an all out action film, Deep Impact is more of a drama which focusses on certain characters (Leo who discovers the comet and the reporter who accidentally discovers the story) on the events up to the comets arrival. We see the strife of leo as he gives up his chance of survival in a bunker to go back and get his girlfriend and also we see how the reporter and her estranged father eventually find each other again. The film is full of big names like Morgan Freeman (a good performance), Robert Duvall, Tea Leoni (mrs david duchovny), Elijah Wood and Vanessa Redgrave. The music is absolutely beautiful scored as it is by James Horner. The special effects are absolutely superb. The sequence near the end where a piece of the comet hits the eastern seaboard and destroys New York is absolutely stunning. What really makes the film for me is the emotion you feel. I felt it the first time i saw it at the cinema. It is most gutwrenching at the end when the comet cannot be stopped. There is a beautiful scene when the reporter is standing on the beach with her father and the comet zooms overhead and smashes into the ocean. The tidal wave is heading uncontrollably towards them and you hear her go "dadddddddyyyyyy..." and also the bit at the end when the crew in the spaceship decide to make the ulimate sacrifice for the sake of all mankind (accompanied by a fantastic horner score) i'd definitely recommend the film if you've seen armageddon and if you're after a good drama this comes highly recommended.

- 03/01/01 I agree abou the film being more of a drama than an all-action thriller. I also love the bit when they're on the beach and the tidal wave is coming and goes on to engulf NY city. Great summing up. |
