Advantages: MOnsters in a ship.
Disadvantages: No storyline what soever
This film, to me was very much like a humorous warning to Insurance-scammers everywhere... If you do intend to claim insurance on something you have purposely destroyed yourself, watch out for mutated seaslugs!!!!!!!! Sorry.....but thats exactly what I thought when I watched Deep Rising on BBC1 last night!! The plot is very thin, but the action thicker than an elephant's girth! You have a little boat + crew, carrying a group of mercenaries and (unknown to the crew) a few warheads. There is also a big cruise liner that has lot of rich people on it. The owner of the cruise liner wants to claim insurance on his ship, because it costs too much to run it. As a result, he stops the liner dead in the sea. His plans seem to work, but instead of his hired mercenraies boarding the ship, something else gets there first... You don't get to see a lot of the mutant sea squid monsters at first. In fact, at the point at which they enter the liner, I thought they were torpedoes......!! The mercenary group are a motley bunch. YOu have a hard-nut captain, an english bloke, an aussie, a woman-loving latino guy and 2 black guys. As in most films, the black men both die...I believe Orlando Jones expressed this quite truely in Evolution!! Anyway, the plot is centered around how the little boat's captain and the rest of the gang discover what has happened to all the passengers of the liner,.....believe me its messy...., and then what they do to survive the onslaught. Famke Janssen stars as a smalltime thief who is operating on the liner, surviving the initial squid attack by being thrown in the brig!! I didnt expect her to play a big part in the film at first, but she does well to blast the creepies as well as play a love-interest. There's not much point in continuing about the plot and characters...you could sum up the story in under 20 words -i'm sure! And the characters are quite forgettable. However, the special effects were quite good fo
r the time that the film was first released. The mutant things look scary, but in many scenes it blatantly looks fake - especially when they chow down on the humans. The big big grand mutant squid (yes, you'd expect one) looked fairly real, and probably is the most ugly creature that I've seen in a movie, since ET... The best effect is the way that the floor gratings fly apart, as the monsters travel around under the floor! Dialogue is pretty lame, there's no discreet jokes, no memorable lines......jeez, this movie is a real brain-snooze-session!! I'd definently recommend you watch this for some light entertainment. It filled up my 2 hours really well! Wait! There was something rememorable - the ending! It was very cheesy, but it did remind me of all those great old cartoons the old "here we go again!" lines! Thats it.
