Advantages: Suprisingly funny ina silly way

Disadvantages: Im renting the sequel today!

This is one of those movies that most of us dismiss straightaway as puerile, obnoxious and too smutty for people like us, and so don't rent it. The people on imdb.com certainly agree and scored it 5.6 out of 10.0. There was a spell in the nineties where tedious gross-out comedies like American Pie and Roadtrip somehow got mainstream and so films like Deuce Bigalow ended up getting made and lumped in that category. It was the same for the movie's star in Rob Schneider, labeled as yet another unfunny Jewish American comedian straight off the Saturday Night Live conveyor belt, given the gig purely because he had family in the business, and trust guys me that happens a lot. When films like this actually come on telly and we smugly tune in to reassure ourselves we were indeed right to dismiss it and so pat ourselves on the back for saving on the rental fee, it's always a pleasant surprise when they aren't actually that bad and we have to hold our hands up, which is the case here. Ina silly way this isn't that bad guys.

I had this down for another 'Dude Where's My Car' (seen it, its crap) scenario from day one and dismissed it out-of-hand. But within ten minutes I was chuckling away like Tony Blair checking Gordon Browns latest opinion polls. It really is quite enjoyable for some reason and Schneider has genuine comic timing in that hapless Billy Crystal mold with a decent twist of Chris Farley wackiness thrown in. Yes the humor is very scattergun and no minority and disability is safe but it's silly in a nice way and with some genuine slapstick and big laughs I find it hard not to like it and certainly recommend it. It's a cross between Dumb and Dumber and Beverly Hills Ninja and perhaps falling into that Bio Dome zone of being ' its so bad its good' movie territory scenario.

-The Plot-

Deuce (Schneider) is a 'fish tank' cleaner in Los Angles, the losers job just that, a sideline in fish care earning him clients sympathies and regular trips to the local aquarium store, where he has the pleasure of ogling the assistants ample boobies, his sex life so far. But his luck is about to turn when one of his clients, a Hungarian gigolo called Antonio (Oded Fehr), entrust him with his playboy flat so to take care of his ailing and very rare fish whilst he's away in Europe for three weeks. Antonio loves his tropical fish more than his women and if Deuce messes up it could be painful. Deuce knows a good deal when he sees it though and soon making himself at home. As long as he obeys the two simple rules Antonio has set-don't use his sports car and answer the phone-then it should be a breeze.

But he soon trashes the place and so needs money to repair the damages, and as the phone is always ringing in gigolos flat then why not do some sub-contract work. How hard can this gigolo business be? But the girls needing a gigolos company in L.A are not the beautiful desperate women he expected, all manner of shapes and sizes offering to pay for his services. To help him to get to grips with the business is 'TJ' (Eddie Griffin), acting as his 'man pimp' and the movies token jive talking black dude to get the brothers into the multiplexes. When the dollars start rolling in the issue is complicated when Deuce falls for one of his clients, wholesome Claire (Gail O`Grady), his services hired by their girlfriends to get her a date, she unaware of that fact and soon falling for her oddball date. But as all the other female clients have suffered with some sort of disability for comic effect, everything from Torettes to extreme obesity, then there must be something wrong with Claire. But will Deuce stick around when he finds out and will Antonio have a reputation and apartment left when he gets back? With the law on his back in the form of detective Chuck Fowler (William Forsythe) and Deuce afraid to tell Claire his true feelings whatever he decides it isn't going to be easy, let alone find the six grand to fix Antonio's apartment by the beach.

-The conclusion-

Lie I say I shouldn't like this but I did, and it's always nice when that happens. Film critics are always panning Rob Schneider and I think the South Park boys have also had a pop at this comic that seems to turn up in a lot of films in cameo parts.
If you're in the mood for some silliness and tropical fish in the blender then you will probably like this. It is aimed at younger crowd but some of the jokes are quite clever in their own way, the one where Deuce meets his dad in the toilets clearly aimed at an older audiences. But what this film does best is make you laugh when you least expect it and that can't be a bad thing. In this politically correct age of not offending this is surprisingly naughty and yet another reason to see it. We all need a good fart or toilet gag, who ever we are.
