I defy any one ( OK, any woman more than likely ) not to LOVE Dirty Dancing. This was my first 'love themed' video ( yes I'm that old ) as a teenager and even now I love it as much as I did then. It's rated a 15, but I would say would parental guidance ( don't watch it with your daughters though or they'll just cringe ) you can make allowances for them to watch it at a younger age in my opinion.
The film begins with the Houseman family travelling in their car to Kellerman's ( a holiday home/challet type resort ), it's 1963 and Baby ( Frances Houseman, played by Jennifer Grey ) is off to college in the autumn. Head of the house, Jake ( Baby and Lisa's father ) is a doctor and has an open offection for his 'favourite' daughter Baby.
It's that night when baby first spots Johnny ( played by Patrick Swayze ) the hired dancer at Kellerman's that her life changes. She becomes immersed in the world of dance and romance, whilst helping out a new friend but both suffer the consequences of and it's this situation that results in Johnny teaching Baby how to dance to take the place of her new friend Penny. As the dancing training goes on, Johnny and Baby become ever closer until they embark on a full blown affair, much to the disappointment of her father. An incident leads to Baby putting her close relationship with her father at further risk by admitting to everyone that Johnny was innocent of any wrong doing since he has an alibi with her all night. Johnny is sacked for becoming involved with a guest and leaves the grounds after an emotional farewell ( emotional for me anyway !! LOL !! ) However, Johnny doesn't stay away long and comes back to find Baby in a corner (whether to hide her there due of any embarassment she put the family through who knows, but it results in Johnny's famous "Nobody puts Baby in a corner " line ) and he leads Baby to the stage for the season's final dance and it's after this that her father comes around to their relationship after a few crossed wires are sorted out.
An amazing film about Baby's first love and first adult relationship as being treated like an adult, not a 'baby'. Whilst father and daughter learn a few things about each other, they learn to love each other regardless and accept the others short comings as a perfect father or daughter. Recommended for all ages, probably 13 and above, although the film has an official rating of 15 I think due to a few scenes and issues such as abortion included in the film.
Summary: Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey star as the believable couple who fall in love one summer.
