What doesn't put Baby in the corner? What carries a watermelon? And what makes the night into the Time of Your Life?
DIRTY DANCING, that's what.
Background;-
Dirty Dancing is a romantic musical, produced in 1987. It was written by Eleanor Bergstein and directed by Emile Ardolino. The stars of the show are Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze. Jennifer plays 'Baby' Houseman, who is on holiday with her family at the Kellerman's holiday camp in the Catskill Mountains. Here she meets the dance instructor Jonny Castle, played by Patrick Swayze. And then her life takes a drastic turn, but in which direction?
Music;-
Music plays a huge part in this film, though that is kind of obvious seeing as it is a musical. The music in this film is just as famous as the film itself and its songs include 'The Time of Your Life' by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes, 'Hungry Eyes' by Eric Carmen and 'Big Girls Don't Cry' by Various Artists. The 'Time of Your Life' is one of the most popular tracks and people of all ages have heard of it whether they have seen the film or not.
Characters;-
'Baby' Houseman, played by Jennifer Grey. 'Baby' wants to change the world, she wants to go into the peace core, and she thinks that her dad is the best guy in the world. 'Baby' has to live in her sister's, Lisa, shadow, which she doesn't like at all, and is fed up of being a 'goodie-two-shoes'.
Johnny Castle, played by Patrick Swayze. Jonny is the dance instructor at the Kellerman's holiday camp. Though he loves dancing he wished he was something else, and could have a 'life' meaning that he wants to have a proper job and earn a decent sum of money.
Jake Houseman, played by Jerry Orbach. Jake is the personal physician of Max Kellerman who owns the resort. Jake treasures his daughter and doesn't want anyone to hurt her. He is proud of her for the fact she wants to change the world.
Penny Johnson, played by Cynthia Rhodes. Penny is Johnny's dance partner and one of his best friends. Penny and 'Baby' also become very close friends.
Dances;-
Blatantly dancing also plays a huge part in this film, and they are amazing. The classically dancing e.g. the Mambo and the Cha-Cha, and the 'dirty dancing', done by the staff at Kellerman's are both amazing. The dancers themselves play a big part in this film too as they come back quite a few times through the film.
Opinion;-
My personal opinion on this film is that it is amazing and worth a watch for any women/teenager. This film contains some of the best quotes imaginable including 'Nobody puts 'Baby' in the corner' and 'I carried a watermelon'. I first saw this film when I was 15 and watched it with my mum. I thought this is going to be horrible and cheesy and no fun to watch at all. What a mistake that was. I loved this film for the music, the dancing and the storyline. It's one of those films that you can watch over and over again, and believe me I would if I had the dvd. This film is one of the best chick-flicks of all time and you should definatly watch it whether you think it is your type of film or not, simply for the dirty dancing experience! So go ahead carry a watermelon! (You'll understand that once you've watched the film).
